…then comic books prove the existence of Superman.”

Or, for that matter, Supergirl:

Or, yah, Wonder Woman:

Or, rather, Lynda Carter:

Bible > God > Superman > Supergirl > Wonder Woman > I believe in Lynda Carter.

The titular quote came from a friend of Tod Brilliant’s, posted to Tod’s Facebook Wall—one of the many places I go when I need ideas that matter, that offend, that inspire thought instead of assumption, and that are fun.

  6. Tod says:

Kmosny – I dunno… I'm betting 90% of women out there would love to look that good at 60. Don't you think?

  7. Ben_Ralston says:

    I'll second that

  8. chad says:

First, Christians believe that the Bible is the word of God, not proof that God exists. Second, so far as I know, Linda Carter DOES exist. I think you may be proving the point you are trying to mock. Third, mocking someones beliefs as being as trivial and stupid as believing in a comic book superhero is not provocative, it is offensive. Not exactly the Open Mindedness that the Elephant is supposed to represent.

  9. NotSoSure says:

Chad: Good point on the Bible is the word of god statement. Magical thinking does not require documentation.

However, it is a often repeated fallacy that being open minded means accepting all ideas and viewpoints equally. An "open minded" person still has the right, and IMO obligation, to reject viewpoints which are false or misleading. Of course this opens the "what is true" can of worms.

Also, EJ is not here to represent anyone's version of what it is to be "open minded". EJ is a forum to express ideas. As always it is up to the reader to debate, accept or reject posts found on EJ.

  10. Oh, Lynda Carter…the Wonder Woman TV show coincided with my budding awareness that there was something interesting about women, making her my first celebrity crush…not exactly a religious experience, but close.

  11. K Sequoia says:

Guess that depends on whether you consider only youth to be capable of 'hotness' I think she looks amazing!

  12. chad says:

@NotSoSure, One man's magical thinking is another man's faith. Also, your right, Inclusive might be a better word than Open Minded. I'm not asking you to believe anything you don't want to. Don't worry, I'm not trying to convert you. I just don't think you should make fun of other's beliefs even if you don't agree with them. Let say someone on Fox News were to say all Muslims are terrorists. Many Muslims would be rightfully angry. A statement like that would be based on an ignorant stereotype. Fox News would certainly be held culpable for providing whoever said it the forum. If the EJ is a forum to express ideas maybe it should focus on well thought out ideas, and not ones plucked willy nilly from someones facebook page.

Superman exists if you take a picture of him and put it on a board and stare at it. True story!
