Today’s Moment of the Day: Bono’s Heartbreak

I discovered recently that the song Stuck in a Moment by U2 is inspired by a fictional conversation Bono had with INXS lead singer Michael Hutchence. Bono considered Hutchence a good friend and was deeply saddened when Hutchence committed suicide in 1997.

Sadly, Hutchence’s demise is thought to have begun in 1992 when he was in an altercation and fractured his skull causing him to lose his sense of smell.

This condition, called Anosmia, is worse than you might initially think. Smell is so intricately connected to attraction, taste, and memory.

Don’t take your senses for granted. As Nabokov said, “Smells are surer than sights or sounds to make your heart-strings crack.”

Watch a recent performance by Bono and The Edge of “Stuck in a Moment,” their tribute to the late, great Michael Hutchence.
