Hello Friends!

Where Is My Guru‘s first show of 2012 was so amazing we can hardly contain our excitement in sharing it’s good fortune with you. We welcomed two amazing guests to the show, successfully kicking off the new year both mindfully and informatively.

This year Where Is My Guru will be hosting a series of “Extraordinary Interviews” from Kripalu, the Institute of Extraordinary Living. To help us start this series off we were honored to have Vandita Kate Marchesiello, senior teacher and Director of Kripalu’s Teaching for Diversity program, on the show.  The program, providing  grants and scholarships to members of the Kripalu Yoga Teachers Association (KYTA) and the International Association of Black Yoga Teachers (IABYT), allows proper training and guidance  for teachers to instruct classes in disadvantaged schools or to diverse populations. You can read more about their impressive list of past grant recipients here.

We also welcomed come-back guest Abi White, an England based life coach. Last time as our first guest of the year Abi coined 2011 as “The Year of Infinite Abundance.” This year, Abi says, is “The Year Of Manifestation”. Her words of wisdom and encouragement left us with goosebumps and left us feeling highly motivated.

Abi White: “The important things are being personally responsible, taking control, finding peace in every moment in every day, accepting that the things that are happening are exactly the things that should be happening and trusting that in the moment. When you start to shift from infinite abundance into infinite manifestation you really do want to see the acorn growing into an oak tree. Infinite manifestation has to come through belief and education. That education is self education, personal responsibility and acceptance of who you are. No more beating ourselves up. It’s got to stop. It’s time for change. It’s 2012, apparently the end of the world. Lets really start to focus on if it were the end of the world, what would I spend my time doing?”

YES! #2012Manifestation! Great job, as always GURU TEAM! elephants! Who do you want to see on the Where is My Guru Show in 2012?

i will be happy if i never hear the words "manifestation" or "abundance" again! such nonsense – especially alongside some really substantive seeming endeavors you are highlighting. do disadvantaged kids need to learn how to manifest more effectively – are they disadvantaged because their families just haven't realized that the universe is abundant?

i am sure your heart is in the right place though… 🙂

    Thank you Julian!

  4. Hi Julian, thanks so much for touching base. Manifestation and abundance may seem like nonsense if they are not backed up appropriately with right action. As we see in the Bhagavad Gita, the journey of the individual and how he or she shows up in the world is connected to his or her life purpose and the implementation of that life purpose through right action. A modern day classic which is enjoying virtual book club attention on elephant journal, "The Four Desires: Creating a Life of Purpose, Happiness, Prosperity, and Freedom" by Rod Stryker, provides an action plan toward manifestation which I find particularly interesting and implementable as it moves away from "manifestation" as an ethereal concept and toward a tangible bricks and mortar campaign. As a fundraiser with more than fifteen years experience raising funds and awareness for progressive programs that directly support and impact hard-to-reach communities and populations, I also understand that education and advocacy are critical pieces to bridge the gap between concept and crisis management. Would love to hear additional thoughts around this, and happy to see a conversation moving around these ideas.

Ouch! You sort of went in a direction that the post was not really headed, but hey! That is what you saw in it and I totally respect that. I can see where you are coming from for sure. I have caught myself over the last few days watching as I embrace a set of words to define this project that I would definitely not have chosen three or four years ago. Manifesting to WIMG has more to do with creating tangible action – like what Diane has said below about the Gita. The Yoga of Action. Putting our ideas in motion. One of our beloved guests chose to use the word Manifestation and you know, it fits, for us. Certainly does not mean it has to fit for all. Over 50% of our programming on WIMG is devoted to providing a voice for service projects and organizations – and we want our voice to spread.

Oh, and we would LOVE to have you on the show sometime, Julian! Peace.

fair enough – but why use the word "manifestation" which means magical thinking a la the movie "the secret" when what you really mean is setting goals and taking action in the world.

"2012: the year of manifestation" is a title that carries too much new age baggage – as if 2012 is some special prophecied year in which we can learn magical powers and manifest new realities with infinite power etc…

"abundance" is also a heavily loaded new age concept that basically exists in opposition to the simlilarly new age diagnosis that we only don't have enough if we come from a "consciousness of lack" and that there is always enough – which as i point out in my examples is only true if you are already privileged.

at some point a substantive spirituality has to give up these concepts/beliefs that do not hold up to a minute's critical thinking and are inadequate to the task of adequately, honestly and respectfully describing reality and the suffering, injustice and limitations inherent to being human.

don't get me wrong! set goals, think creatively, do wonderful work helping others, take risks that provide opportunities to move forward, get the necessary training, go back to the drawing board if (as is so often the case) things don't work out well the first time, keep believing in yourself ( while being open to reality's feedback) – but ditch the bad magical thinking language!

    well for a couple reasons:

    1) it's just dishonest – no one ever "manifested" anything in the true sense of magical thinking the word conveys. there is also not an infinite amount of abundance – many people are starving and suffering and millions die as i write this from illnesses that are curable at a very low price, but they happen to have been born in underprivileged situations, because of variables that have nothing to do with rose colored new age explanations. (glance at some of the responses to my comments and you will see the usual rationalizing of disadvantage = bad karma from a past life…. yuk!)

    2) the unfortunate side effect in our over emphasis on concepts like this and "being positive" is that:

    a) people who actually don't have the ability, training or talent to do what they are trying to manifest keep trying anyway instead of heeding the feedback from reality…

    b) people who buy into this belief system will often end up blaming themselves when they get fired, have an accident, develop a terrible illness, are attacked in the street, fail to make a million dollars etc – because hey, why did you manifest this and don't you know the perfect universe is abundant if you just believe it is….

it is an insidious and problematic perspective on reality and comes directly from christian science via prosperity gospel and new age notions of time speeding up, vibes getting higher and all people being able to develop paranormal abilities as we approach the great awakening or some such silliness.

all of that said – it is precisely because you appeared to me to be someone interested in education, advocacy, fund raising and real world service etc that i have challenged you on the use of this language – thanks for being open to discussion!

    all the best,

  9. Gottcha, Julian, and your discussion truly is appreciated! Real glad we're here together. I see how connecting the word "manifestation" with the term "magical thinking" can throw things by the way of "New Age" terminology and why this might be a turn-off. I would love to hear your thoughts on this post by Metal Yoga: http://metalyoga.wordpress.com/2011/12/25/lidless…. He discusses recognizing and understanding manifestation via quantum non-locality, bringing the stuff of science into the discourse and seeing where this takes us. And what of The Quantum Activist? http://www.quantumactivist.com/

*rubbing hands* Oh boy, this is getting good 🙂 Thanks Julian! xo D.
