Gene Kelly doing “Singin’ in the Rain” is my kind of guy—a fool for love.
(He gets going about fifty seconds in.)
Gene would never have guessed that he was personifying the bhakti yogi. A being so enflamed with love for the Divine that all he can see and feel is the sun that’s really blazing within him—it only seems like the sun overhead. This is akin to what the bhakti yogi feels 24/7.
Bhakti yogis are fools for Divine Love. To a bhakti yogi God isn’t an impersonal authority figure looking down from on high. This kind of yogi’s relationship with God is ultra-personal, even though taking place at a transcendent soul level.
One way the bhakti yogi relates to God is as a lover. Only God appears to be playing hard to get, causing the yogi to yearn and burn desperately. You know that feeling, when you go woozy with desire for someone who just keeps leading you on.
Likewise the bhakti yogi exists constantly in an enraptured or enchanted state of love. Among the primary ways bhaktis through the ages have invited the Divine into their hearts has been by chanting a bhajan, devotional song, like Prabhujee, which means beloved Lord or master.*
Oh Master, show some compassion on me!
Please come and dwell in my heart.
Because without you, it is painfully lonely.
Fill this empty pot with the nectar of love.
I do not know any Tantra, Mantra, or ritualistic worship.
I know and believe only in you!
I have been searching for you all over the world.
Please come and hold my hand now.
Prabhujee Dayaa Karo
Maname Aana Baso
Tantra Mantra Pooja Nahi Jaanu
Mai To Kevala Tumako Hi Maanu
Sare Jaga Me Dhundaa Tumako
Aba To Aakara Baahan Dharo

The song is basically a call to God from a devotee…the devotee is calling all over the world for the Lord in the only language that he/she knows…love. Life without the Lord is lonely…and the devotee knows nothing of religion and sorts of rituals and dogma…no…the devotee only asks that God come and dwell within his/her heart…that is the one desire…
“Prabhujee” appears on the cd Chants of India, a compilation of chants and prayers from the Vedas and other Hindu scriptures set to music by Ravi Shankar. George Harrison produced the 1997 album and does vocals. (More information at Amazon.com.)
