The fact is, I’m gay, always have been, always will be, & I couldn’t be any more happy, comfortable with myself, & proud.

Anderson Cooper Comes Out, & Eloquently Explains Why Now.

Read it here, via equally eloquent Andrew Sullivan on the Daily Beast:

Anderson Cooper: “The Fact Is, I’m Gay.”

While few of his fans are surprised—he’s been more or less openly gay for years—his eloquence, above, has made this a powerful and touching moment.

His respect here in the face of bigotry is even more powerful, given the context:

In other news, CNN Breaking Report: Supreme Court declares that Anderson Cooper is Heterosexual. (News Junkie Joke)

“I’ve also been reminded recently that while as a society we are moving toward greater inclusion and equality for all people, the tide of history only advances when people make themselves fully visible.”

Undoubtedly gay people do face discrimination in the work place (totally legally in most parts of the country, by the way; please support ENDA). From the very start, they’re 40% less likely to get an interview just as one example. Cooper’s success would have been less likely as openly gay, but instead of a strict “glass ceiling” what he would have hit is clearly more permeable than that, today.
