Sometimes, it just isn’t possible to spend an hour on your mat.
Life gets in the way.
You have to take the kids to school, take a shower, go to work, make dinner…the list goes on and on.
We are all given the same amount of minutes in the day, but sometimes it really feels like someone is stealing a few.
Yoga can often get pushed onto the back burner, because there is an idea that your practice needs to be strict, serious and long.
So, when you’ve been running around all day and you finally get a few moments to rest on the couch, you don’t know if you have the energy to dedicate that hour to the mat in a silent room, especially when those few moments of down time you have are with your kids running around you.
So…why not start taking your practice with you throughout your day? Why not take a few deep breathes while you’re waiting for the traffic light to turn green? Why not spend a moment in forward fold when you’re sorting through your filing cabinets? Ease into Warrior 2 when you’re putting the dishes away? Plank while you’re waiting for the water to boil?
I love this hashtag on Instagram: #PracticeMakesPractice.
There is no perfect practice. Your practice is your own. So claim it and make it fit with your life instead of forcing yourself into an uncomfortable position.
This weekend, when you’re hanging out with your family or, like me, your dog watching a movie, get moving on your couch.
Be gentle with yourself. Don’t guilt yourself into rolling out your mat.
Instead, find joy in your practice and find new ways to explore. If your kids ask what you’re doing, challenge them to join in and make it a game. See how many breathes are in a commercial break and try and hold plank pose for that long!
Yoga does not have to be limited to the mat or that sacred space of your home.
The best moments are when you incorporate your practice in your everyday life.
