Nearly a year ago I started the process of closing one of the most significant relationships I’ve ever been in.

It has taken me ten months to end the story with the love of my life, or my “Amazonian emperor,” as I remember him.
When I met my emperor we began sharing our dreams, values, jokes, adventures, and even silence. We were so deeply connected that we decided to take on a lifetime project together.

Without worrying much about my career—which used to take priority—I jumped in headfirst.

Despite our love for each other, we lacked maturity, patience and perspective. Over the past months, I’ve asked myself so many times why we were unable to overcome our differences; and now I’ve started to understand why. My story with the emperor has ended, but the ability to love and learn and shape a better relationship remain with me.

Here are some of the lessons I have learned:

Listen to your heart.

Our heart is wise.

It tells us what we need to do in order to grow, it puts our egos in check and allows us to overcome obstacles with kindness. When I was with my emperor, I stopped taking action and addressing some of our problems because I trusted my pragmatic thoughts rather than my raw emotions. I came to think that my decisions were irrational and this paralyzed me.

When you long for something and your heart shows you the way, follow it—no matter how crazy it may seem.

Nourish your love, in the now.

It’s natural to make all sorts of plans when we start sharing your life with someone.

We must make sure our expectations don’t become the foundation of our relationships, or we’ll spend our lives waiting around for something that is only in our mind.

Through my process of finding closure, I suffered from losing the man I love, but I also suffered in recognizing that we could never achieve all of the plans we had dreamed up. The latter is unnecessary suffering.

Build your love on what’s concrete and happening in the now—the present is what matters. We must love our partner for whomever he or she is; we must love them for the experiences we share; the conversations, sex, laughs, disagreements and commonalities.

Defend your relationship.

Whomever we begin to share our lives with will become our partner, our confidant and our family. There were times when I failed to recognize my emperor for who he was in my life, mostly because of unfounded fears.

Always be aware that the wellbeing of our partners and the health of our relationships must be our top priority; defending our relationship from others’ opinions and keeping ghosts from the past from entering the picture.

Give disagreement a space. It’s healthy.

We are imperfect, and we must accept this. Some of the things we do and say will bother our partners. I got offended and took it personally when my Amazonian emperor disagreed with some of my behaviors and attitudes.

I lacked the maturity to understand that he was just exposing his opinions and needs, and that it wasn’t an attack on me. Disagreement, even anger, is normal. It happens and it shouldn’t turn into drama. Open a space for your partner to share a different perspective. If the relationship is “perfect,” it might not be real.

Learn to set limits.

The emperor and I didn’t know how to end our discussions appropriately. There are certain words that stick and create wounds that not even time can heal.

We must make a point to take a “time out” when it’s clear that discussions might escalate out of control. When anger is gone and we’re seeing the forest through the trees again, we’ll be able to tackle any problem.

Be thankful for every moment.

Nobody is responsible for making us happy. Additionally, our partners have no obligation to meet our expectations. Relationships are based on kindness and are driven by love.

We must be thankful for every moment shared with our partners. We must learn to enjoy giving as much as receiving.

Always tell the truth, even if it’s inconvenient.

I found myself skirting the truth when engaged in tough discussions with my emperor. At times, I would even lie about my past, fearing that he might judge me. I’ve learned that empathy grows out of a relationship that fosters dialogue and understanding. Make fear of judgment play second fiddle to transparency.

We shouldn’t underestimate our partner and his or her capacity to understand us. We should establish an open and honest line of communication and strengthen the trust we have in the process. Truth should always come first, even if it leads to disappointments.

Cultivate humility.

We don’t have to prove to the world that we are capable of winning an argument. Being right won’t always make us happy; it also won’t make our relationships healthier.

We must have the humility to recognize our mistakes. We must listen to the needs of our partners and provide support with a healthy dose of love. Humility will help you convert a fight into an opportunity to grow and practice real communication. Identify those subjects that are non-negotiable—those are the ones where we should defend our points of view. For everything else, it’s a give and take.

I am thankful to my Amazonian emperor for all what we’ve shared, he has been one of my masters in love and personal growth. Wounds heal, and love is a noble feeling that gives us a door to the most profound longings of our hearts. Stay awake and open.

Escucha a tu corazón.

Llegué a considerar mis decisiones poco racionales y me paralicé.

Aprende a poner límites.

Permanezcamos despiertos y abiertos.
