This is possibly the most authentic interview I have ever seen.
Lisl Steiner, who worked as a photo-journalist for Time magazine, speaks about her life and disrobes on camera as part of StyleLikeU’s “What’s Underneath Project.”
What is it? In short, StyleLikeU states: “We’ve asked a select group of individuals to participate in a project in which they will remove their clothes to honor how style is not the clothes you wear, it is comfort in your skin, it is your spirit, it is what’s underneath.”
Fleeing the Nazis, growing up in Argentina and photographing Fidel Castro, Jimmy Carter and JFK’s funeral during Lisl Steiner’s career as a photojournalist. “Those things will really leave an impression on a lady” says StyleLikeU about a woman who clearly has seen and done much.
Lisl feels that beauty is about contentment and tells anyone who does not agree with her unusual style to go f*ck themselves.
It does not come across as arrogance, but more poignantly, as a reasonable reaction to another’s criticism—this lady knows herself and is comfortable in her own skin.
Skin you will see as she gradually sheds all her layers and reveals what’s underneath the clothes—the true expression of her humanity, breast cancer scars and all.
A few words from Lisl about falling and her distinct comfort with where she is in life;
“[At] 88, you become more frail. You walk like a duck to prevent several falls. I’m a fallen woman. I fell several times.
When I was 16, I had dramatic art lessons. The first thing you learn is to fall down.
I was a mountaineer, I made love on a mountain. I was a horsewoman. So when I fall, I fall correctly.” ~ Lisl Steiner
She is both brilliantly candid and unafraid of offending. She’s so real it makes me want to re-examine how I live my days.
I was tempted to show a video of someone younger possibly with more sex appeal as they got naked.
Perhaps my readers would relate more to a more modern viewpoint—I pondered. But in the end, I chose Lisl.
She touched my soul with desire to be real. I admire her.
