According to a study done by ShopSmart, most people who are junk food consumers stated that they choose to eat junk food because healthy food is too expensive.

The irony lies in the bigger picture in how eating junk food regularly can end up costing you $1 million sooner than you think. There’s plenty of evidence that regularly consuming highly processed, artificial, Frankenstein-like junk food is linked to heart disease, obesity, diabetes, and cancer.

According to this CBS article, a severe heart attack can cost you up to $1 million. For a less severe heart attack, about $760,000. Amortized over 20 years…that’s $50,000 per year for a severe heart attack and $38,000 per year for a less severe heart attack. That’s not including the physical cost of having an injured heart, as well as the emotional costs you, your family and friends will experience from the stress that comes of being a heart attack survivor.

That being said, is eat really worth it for you to eat junk food? Is it really worth it if you’re looking to save some bucks on your grocery bill? No. As you raise your standard, you subtly raise the bar for those around you. We vote with our money and by choosing to spend your money on chemical coated and over-processed junk food, you are subtly telling that shop, grocery store, venue, vendor, and company to keep producing the same foods. Instead, choose organic, high quality foods because you’re a high quality person, and we deserve high quality foods to enjoy high quality lives.

Many people think organic foods are too expensive, and here’s a few tips that will help you live an organic lifestyle on a budget:

The power of bulk: when you buy in bulk, you can get dozens of delicious, organic meals out of food like quinoa and rice.

Shop at local farmers markets: you’ll develop personal relationships with farmers who grow very high quality foods and will often hook you up with deals.

Grow your own: get fresh, organic veggies and fruits at the comfort of your home anytime.

Get what’s in season: find out what foods are in season and buy those in bulk to get better deals.

Home made meals: prepare your organic food at home much more often than eating out as the price can rack up exponentially.

Stop wasting food: be smart about how much food you need and buy, along with how you store it.
