Hashtag Dharma?

Connect with @elephantjournal, @waylonlewis, @walkthetalkshow on Instagram or twitter.

There are countless old beloved Buddhist stories of a teacher learning how to communicate the truth of meditation, compassion, humor and loving-kindness through the medium of that time.

Buddhadharma isn’t about being Tibetan, or Japanese, or Indian, or of any one culture. It’s about walking a path of service, and practicing meditation so that we can learn to be more fully present instead of caught up in self-concern and confusion.

And that brings me to something that’s befuddled me for years. And maybe you can help.

In modernday life, we use hashtags in social media communication. We might make fun of them, but many of them simply help to connect communities interested in something.

#yogaeverydamnday has united millions—literally—of casual and serious yogis in practicing yoga, and sharing a pose with their friends. It might be silly, but it’s also fun, and motivational, and community-building. I’d like to do the same thing with meditation, or any mindful moment or act for the elephant community—which has reached nearly 25 million readers a month.

So what’s a good hashtag for us? #mindfulmoment, #dailymindful, #mindfuldeed, #30daysofmindful, #ofbenefit, #mindfullife, #beofbenefit and #mayitbeofbenefit are a few that we’ve thought about, or tried. A good hashtag has to be simple to remember and spell, fun, meaningful and community-building through inspiring folks to share something visual.

In searching for a hashtag that could serve to unite and inspire millions, if only for a moment, I’ve thought about who we are and what we care about. We don’t want meditation itself in the hashtag, since meditation is not something we want to encourage folks to selfie. But at its root, we do want folks to share their mindfulness moments, their environmental deeds no matter how small, their moments of kindness toward self and others, and inspire others to do the same.

Elephant is interested in being of benefit. In meditation. In being friendly to ourselves, and our environment. In retaining a sense of humor. In independence, and integrity from caplitalistic greed and corruption, while still behaving as a successful and fun mindful business.

For years—12 years—my slogan for elephant has been “the mindful life,” or, “it’s about the mindful life.” Our mission has been to bring awareness to anything that’s good for us, that also happens to be good for others and our planet. Twice or more a day, when I meditate or after I eat, I recite the Buddhist dedication of merit: “By this merit may all…” …basically, dedicating whatever I’ve done, even my mess-ups, to the benefit of all. My food isn’t merely about me. My work isn’t for me, merely. Our editorial mission has been to bring the good word about the mindful life beyond the core or choir and to all those who might give a care.

So I’ve thought about these threads of mission, and here’s my favorites:

1. #mindfulmomentoftheday
2. #mindfulmoment
3. #mayitbeofbenefit
4. #beofbenefit
5. #bythismerit
6. #giveacare
7. #mindful365
8. #dailymindfulmoment
9. #other!

Which would you use? Tell me in comments below, if so inspired. Let’s launch mindfulness to all those swimming in the busy seas of social media!

Yours in the Vision of an Enlightened Society,

Waylon Lewis

#mindfulmoment is short and descriptive, and focuses on just what it says, which is within reach by most of us. It's also not self-conscious.

anonymous Oct 25, 2015 1:01am

#mindfulmoment : it flows nice, is simple, and gets the point across!

anonymous Oct 17, 2015 9:47pm

I may be a little late to this #hashtag party….and I'd still like to vote for #mindfulmoment or #mindful365 [I believe the former captures the essence of Elephant's mission: BE Mindful IN every moment possible….and the latter meets the easy to remember + captures a "vision" mindfulness year-round….my #2cents <grin>

anonymous Oct 14, 2015 5:38pm

I like #beofbenefit or #mindfulmoment. Thank you!!

anonymous Oct 11, 2015 3:08pm

anonymous Oct 10, 2015 2:11pm

#dailymindfulmoment seems the best to me

#elephantmind #mindfulme #dailyelephant #anelephantaday #mindformatter
And I quite like #mindfulnessmatters above but feel like we could do better… How's about #dailymind (play on the expression "daily grind"

anonymous Oct 7, 2015 9:27am

#Mindfulmoment … we just have to share them when they happen!

anonymous Oct 6, 2015 10:14pm

#mindful365; easy to remember, means what it days, visually memorable…simple.

anonymous Oct 6, 2015 8:52am

#mindfulmoment resonates with me and then there is #elephantmind which I did not see on the list

anonymous Oct 6, 2015 5:48am

Seems like I'm in the minority..however I love #bythismerit. Perhaps it brings me back to Girl Scout days and earning badges.

#beofbenefit #mindfulmoment #2 #4

anonymous Oct 5, 2015 2:49pm

mindfulmoment is already sending the message with just the hashtag, so powerful.

anonymous Oct 5, 2015 2:45pm

#mindfulmoment seems the most simple and memorable. It slys off the tongue easily, or should I say the fingertips

anonymous Oct 5, 2015 12:28pm

#beofbenefit resonates with me. It's universal. We should all be of some benefit to others.

anonymous Oct 5, 2015 12:24pm

#mindfulmoment sounds gooood to me 🙂

anonymous Oct 5, 2015 11:28am

anonymous Oct 5, 2015 11:06am

anonymous Oct 5, 2015 10:29am

Midfullmoment is easy to remember and rhymes. It is catchy too and has my vote!

anonymous Oct 5, 2015 10:26am

I would use #mindfulheart. The heart is the access point for the fields of unity we call source/soul/higherself…the mind is just a piece of that

anonymous Oct 5, 2015 8:02am

anonymous Oct 5, 2015 7:44am

I love it!

anonymous Oct 5, 2015 6:31am

anonymous Oct 5, 2015 5:16am

#mindfulmoment #beofbenefit

anonymous Oct 5, 2015 5:12am

I love #mayitbeofbenefit; it puts the purpose of life here on earth in five words.

anonymous Oct 5, 2015 4:45am

one and seven..cause they cover the concept.

anonymous Oct 5, 2015 2:31am

anonymous Oct 5, 2015 2:26am

#mindful365 says it all

anonymous Oct 5, 2015 1:09am

mindfulness of the day 365

anonymous Oct 5, 2015 12:27am

Even though mindfulness has been around for quite some time, it did not become a part of the public vernacular until recently. It has been slowly gaining recognition for it merits in many areas, extending far beyond just meditation. I picture the increasing momentum of understanding as a virtual sea, flowing outward and bringing individuals together to reach a collective state of peaceful awareness. For this reason, when I read your weekly letter, the first idea that came to mind was #mindfulmovement.

anonymous Oct 4, 2015 9:55pm

If you want people to the hashtags, in my opinion these two are too long:

1. #mindfulmomentoftheday
8. #dailymindfulmoment

I do like #mindful365

anonymous Oct 4, 2015 8:24pm

#beofbenefit….to me that’s the point. What about #sevatheflava? Haha

anonymous Oct 4, 2015 8:02pm

anonymous Oct 4, 2015 7:42pm

#mindfulmoment seems like the most straightforward, the most flow and the easiest to say.

anonymous Oct 4, 2015 7:21pm

How about

anonymous Oct 4, 2015 7:08pm

#mindfullife sounds smooth. #mindful365 is also a lot more suitable (than the rest) for Internet users who fancy shortcuts and text-speak that can be found all over the Web.

anonymous Oct 4, 2015 7:00pm

#beofbenefit is my choice

anonymous Oct 4, 2015 6:04pm

I like #mindful365

anonymous Oct 4, 2015 5:49pm

I particularly love #mindfulmoment.

anonymous Oct 4, 2015 5:30pm

mindfulmoment…. simple, sweet.

anonymous Oct 4, 2015 5:25pm

anonymous Oct 4, 2015 4:01pm

I like it because it's simple and to the point. And that's what it's all about? Being mindful, living simply…in this moment.

anonymous Oct 4, 2015 2:39pm

anonymous Oct 4, 2015 2:10pm

anonymous Oct 4, 2015 1:51pm

#mindfulmoment would be my vote!

anonymous Oct 4, 2015 12:53pm

anonymous Oct 4, 2015 12:31pm

anonymous Oct 4, 2015 12:19pm

#beofbenefit or #themindfullife says it all!

anonymous Oct 4, 2015 12:01pm

#dailymindfulmoment 😉

anonymous Oct 4, 2015 11:58am

#living mindfully or how about #walkingthetalk Both tie directly to, and will lead newcomers to, the elephant journal

anonymous Oct 4, 2015 11:49am

no9 #Mindfulelephant

anonymous Oct 4, 2015 11:28am

It’s about benefit, has great alliteration, and makes me think of bees.

anonymous Oct 4, 2015 11:22am

I like #midfulmoment it brings you right to the present and wakes you up.

anonymous Oct 4, 2015 11:14am

I really love #bythismerit but #mindfulmoment is more straightforward and just as good.

anonymous Oct 4, 2015 11:05am

I like #mindful365–the combination of word and numbers feels current and correct–and I've never "hash tagged, so this will be a first for me, but it seems worth my time and a great thing to have in the back of my mind as I go through my day.

anonymous Oct 4, 2015 11:01am

I really like #mindfulmoment & #beofbenefit

anonymous Oct 4, 2015 10:46am

#beofbenefit because it's not just about ME!

anonymous Oct 4, 2015 10:44am

All the suggestions on your list are excellent. To settle on just one is hard for me because as a wordsmith, I tend to overthink and analyze each syllable …… in which process I thought of a couple of possibilities for 9. #other. Humbly submitted: #inthemoment and #beAware

anonymous Oct 4, 2015 10:40am

#mindfulmoment has my vote. Easy to type. Easy to remember. Sums it up well.

anonymous Oct 4, 2015 10:39am

anonymous Oct 4, 2015 10:36am

anonymous Oct 4, 2015 10:25am

#mindful365 pretty much encompasses all – simple, yet strong in its message and short enough to remember and stick.

I also came up with #mindfulwayoflife stemming from New York State of Mind. Just a thought…

anonymous Oct 4, 2015 10:24am

I like #beofbenefit A lot. This covers a spectrum of: metta, awareness, mindful actions, and as a life of service to eachother (all beings/planet included). I think it would provoke people to take the extra time to do Something for another. In the same line of thinking, as I was reading your post, I though #inserviceoflife … An enlightened society could be no other way! #peace✌️

anonymous Oct 4, 2015 10:10am

#mindful365 gets my vote!

anonymous Oct 4, 2015 10:09am

#mindfulmoment is simple and easy and says it……in a busy world that helps!

anonymous Oct 4, 2015 10:08am

Love the sound, idea and feeling of “beofbenefit”.

anonymous Oct 4, 2015 10:04am

I like #mindful 365…keep it simple and daily:)

anonymous Oct 4, 2015 10:04am

I like #mindfulmoment, but also #mindful365 as being the easiest to spell correctly and one of the shortest. For a hashtag, I think that gets big bonus points!

anonymous Oct 4, 2015 9:56am

I have a website for caregivers. I’ve encouraged them to meditate as a way of reducing their daily stress. I like #mindfulmoment because it reminds people that meditation doesn’t have to take a lot of your time. This is especailly important for those (mothers, medial professionals, etc.) who feel overewhelmed by their dailly duties. It also encompasses other acts that reflect mindfulness — like caring for others.

anonymous Oct 4, 2015 9:55am

I like giveacare

anonymous Oct 4, 2015 9:54am

I love #mindfulmoment ❤️

anonymous Oct 4, 2015 9:54am

#mindfulmoment says it all for me.

anonymous Oct 4, 2015 9:51am

I'm voting for #mindfullmoment.

anonymous Oct 4, 2015 9:50am

anonymous Oct 4, 2015 9:31am

Suggesting: #livingmomenttomoment

anonymous Oct 4, 2015 9:30am

your slogan and a way of life for us all!!

anonymous Oct 4, 2015 9:05am

anonymous Oct 4, 2015 9:01am

#mindful365 really rings well for me!

anonymous Oct 4, 2015 9:01am

anonymous Oct 4, 2015 9:00am

#mindfulmoment. Keep it in the here & now & let yourself have more than one a day!

#dailymindfulmoment or #mindfulmoment

anonymous Oct 4, 2015 8:55am

anonymous Oct 4, 2015 8:54am

anonymous Oct 4, 2015 8:43am

I like #mindful365

anonymous Oct 4, 2015 8:41am

My favorite from the list is #MindfulMomentOfTheDay ! A bit long for a hashtag but to me is the most suitable

anonymous Oct 4, 2015 8:25am

I lIke best of your choices, rock on.

anonymous Oct 4, 2015 8:18am

It needs to be a daily thing
For some a moment a day for others several moments in a day others several moments all at once

But daily is the key
To be mindful and mindful ready it cannot be once a year, quarterly or for 7 days straight in your favourite month or for heavens sake during shark week:-)

anonymous Oct 4, 2015 8:17am

#mindfulmoment is easy to understand, remember and to use so it has my vote.

anonymous Oct 4, 2015 8:15am

I run a small janitorial company in Lansing Michigan. I was proud to offer a tai chi/meditation workshop for my staff and more than half of them came. All of them found it beneficial. We may continue monthly workshops for everyone’s growth and practice of meditation. I’m so grateful

anonymous Oct 4, 2015 8:11am

#2 is my favorite. Simple. Mindful encompasses all the other ideas in one. It would definitely grab me.

anonymous Oct 4, 2015 8:09am

first choice: mindfullife. second choice: mindful365

anonymous Oct 4, 2015 8:07am

I am still learning #thehashtagthing, But a few I often think of using is;

anonymous Oct 4, 2015 8:05am

Hi Waylon,

I tend to agree with those before me.

#mindfulmoment and #giveacare are easy for anyone to remember, including the newcomers (like myself). My first preference was #mindfullife, until I caught myself in a typo, missing the double “L”…it would be an easy mistake for anyone to make.

Blessings and love.

anonymous Oct 4, 2015 8:03am

Clear, easy to remember, pertinent

anonymous Oct 4, 2015 8:02am

Excellent reflections here Waylon – I like #Mindful365, but alliteration is very useful in hashtags, and while you have some they don't seem to "Pop" as I would think you'd want them to.
I also agree with Phoebe with the #mindfullife – it does seem to be in keeping so to speak.
Keep up the good work!

anonymous Oct 4, 2015 7:51am

#beofbenefit is my choice or #mindfulmoment I also like #mindfullife as Phoebe noted above.

anonymous Oct 4, 2015 7:47am

#MindfulMoment It uses alliteration, is short, and uses no unusual words, which makes it easy to remember. Also, I think it captures your message, but also leaves room for people to interpret it in their own way.

Sorry if this is a repeat, it didn't show up the first time I hit enter.

anonymous Oct 4, 2015 7:42am

I like #mindfulmoment. It is simple, easy to remember, and says it all. BTW, I do not use #tags, however I might for this regardless of #… Regards, Maryann

anonymous Oct 4, 2015 7:38am

Hi! I really like #dailymindfulmoment because for me that is exactly what relephant is to me.

anonymous Oct 4, 2015 7:34am

#MindfulMoment It uses alliteration, is short, and uses no unusual words, which makes it easy to remember. Also, I think it captures your message, but also leaves room for people to interpret it in their own way.

anonymous Oct 4, 2015 7:34am

#mindfulmoment from the list, but just as Phoebe mentions: why not go with #mindfullife as you suggested in the article itself, but not in the list? #mindfullife is indeed very close to your ‘slogan’ it’s about the mindful life and – Love, Roxanne

anonymous Oct 4, 2015 7:33am

I was drawn to #maybeofbenefit and #giveacare

anonymous Oct 4, 2015 7:32am

Good morning all, I can not say I know much about hashtags but the only one I can think of right now is meant to be slightly funny ‘ whatmindfulhashtag’
Regards that are kind

anonymous Oct 4, 2015 7:30am

I like #mindful365 or could you do #mindful24/7?
I also like #giveadamn lol!
I love this concept and can’t wait to get involved

anonymous Oct 4, 2015 7:23am

anonymous Oct 4, 2015 7:21am

anonymous Oct 4, 2015 7:17am

anonymous Oct 4, 2015 7:07am

First choice: #mindful365

Second: #mindfulmoment

I too like #mindfullife but it wasn’t on your list . . .

anonymous Oct 4, 2015 7:07am

Hi Waylon,

#mindfulmoment and #beofbenefit both are easy to remember and convey the message you are wanting to spread. I love this idea!

anonymous Oct 4, 2015 7:06am

I like #mindful

I kind of like the # mindfulmoment one on the list but it feels that moment is redundant.

anonymous Oct 4, 2015 7:03am

My vote is for #mindfulmoment. The alliteration makes it fun and easy to remember. It's also super relevant.

anonymous Oct 4, 2015 6:58am

anonymous Oct 4, 2015 6:55am

Hi. From the list, I like #mindfulmoment best. Or why not use #mindfullife, since that’s been your slogan for 12 years?

anonymous Oct 4, 2015 6:52am

Has a ‘command quality’, which suggests action, even in the form of your existence. People tend to respond to suggestion for action.

anonymous Oct 4, 2015 6:47am

anonymous Oct 4, 2015 6:42am

Thank you for all the positive ripples you share across the digital pond.
When I experience “merit” it feels to me like “grace.”
To maintain your Elephant Journal brand/identify I suggest #EJgrace or #graceEJ or simply #gracej
My hastag is #a3r which represents: agility = resilience, responsiveness and reflection.
Cheers to our collective journey.

anonymous Oct 4, 2015 6:34am

I really like #3 mayitbeofbenefit I like it because in itself is a mini-prayer and blessing – so the act of using it requires some one for an instant to send out a blessing – pay attention to the attempt at connection to the original wholeness through compassionate connection to another human.

anonymous Oct 4, 2015 6:30am

Even though hashtags are loaded with the possibility of being exploited, it is the vernacular that is commonly being utilized today, so it is natural to try to understand and communicate/connect with our larger worldly community in that way! I really appreciate the #mindfulmoment… and that we don’t want meditation selfies. Yeah.. really don’t want meditation selfies.

Other options:
#intention or #withintention

anonymous Oct 4, 2015 6:28am

Interesting and inspiriting article. The most ''mindful'' ones for me are :
#beofbenefit and #giveacare

Greetings from the Netherlands, Claudette

anonymous Oct 4, 2015 6:23am

I have never used a # but you’ve got me convinced! I like 2&3!

    anonymous Oct 7, 2015 1:11am

    Like stacy k this is my first #. I'm going with #giveacare & #mindful365.

anonymous Oct 4, 2015 6:19am

My favorites from the list are #mindfulmoment and #beofbenefit.

But I also liked #mindfullife.

anonymous Oct 4, 2015 6:18am

I am for the #mindfulmoment

anonymous Oct 4, 2015 6:13am

I like #mindfulmoment, but I like #inthismoment even better.

anonymous Oct 4, 2015 6:12am

I like #2, but would make it plural. (Moments)

anonymous Oct 4, 2015 6:01am

I like Phoebe's #mindfullife but next #mindfulmoment

anonymous Oct 4, 2015 6:01am

1. No 9 from Phoebe #mindfullife

Hi Waylon,

I really like a lot of the ones you shared..

anonymous Oct 4, 2015 5:54am

Of the choices provided, I really like #mindfulmoment. Thank you.

anonymous Oct 4, 2015 5:49am

Dailymindful or mindful365

anonymous Oct 4, 2015 5:47am

anonymous Oct 4, 2015 5:47am

I like dailymindfulmomment as it inspires the action of doing it daily as well as calling it generally enough to be mindful.
Great idea by the way.

anonymous Oct 4, 2015 5:46am

anonymous Oct 4, 2015 5:46am

anonymous Oct 4, 2015 5:41am

I really like #mindful365 it says everything in a few characters

anonymous Oct 4, 2015 5:39am

Simply #mindfulmoments

anonymous Oct 4, 2015 5:37am

At first thought….I like #mindful365 but I have to agree with Phoebe that #mindfullife seems synonymous with Elephant. Mahalo for all you contribute to my day through elephant.

anonymous Oct 4, 2015 5:37am

I prefer giveacare

anonymous Oct 4, 2015 5:33am

#mindful365 #positiveminds #caretogive

anonymous Oct 4, 2015 5:28am

#mindfulmoment is good.

anonymous Oct 4, 2015 5:25am

Two simple and memorable hashtags that perhaps summarise the ones on your list:

anonymous Oct 3, 2015 5:31pm

Hi Waylon, I agree! I've seen enough instagram shots of people meditating (how?!) to not want to go there, but I love this idea of hash tagging our mindful moments. Therefore my favourites of your final list are #mindfulmoment and #beofbenefit, but actually, I preferred #mindfullife, which you mentioned earlier in the article. Is there a reason you didn't go for that? I find it's easy to remember, as someone who reads regularly I'm used to seeing that line at the top of my screen, 'dedicated to the mindful life'. For me, that line has become synonymous with elephant and a daily mantra. Thanks for all you give, Phoebe.

anonymous Oct 3, 2015 5:09pm

anonymous Oct 3, 2015 11:50am

Hi Waylon!

I've got a love/hate relationship with hashtags, but I really agree with what you've said here. My favorites from your list are #mindfulmoment, #beofbenefit and #giveacare.

Other suggestions:

    #liveyourdharma or #benefitallbeings

    anonymous Oct 4, 2015 10:58pm

    I think mindful365 is a brilliant one.

    anonymous Oct 5, 2015 3:51pm

Although I've never used a hashtag before, I get how it has become a uniter of people. I really like #mindful365. It's succinct and packs a big punch.

James Torres Jr. Jul 16, 2018 6:37pm

8 #dailymindfulmoment It attaches itself to a trend that is growing in Western culture and can reach more people. It also establishes a challenge to the individual. #spreadthelove

Marisa Vogel Feb 17, 2018 9:25am

I am drawn to #giveacare; it feels like something that would resonate beyond the choir effortlessly, likely because of its similarity to 'give a damn'. It's like 'give a damn' with soft edges and approved for all audiences.

Morgan Nicole Rhodes Oct 2, 2017 7:00pm

#mindful365 :) Did you ever kick this off?

Chezarina Moran Oct 2, 2017 3:45am

I like #mindfulmoment and #mindful365.

Janine Schoonover Jul 8, 2017 1:09pm

Reviewing each hashtag from above, #mindfulmoment is the one most frequently used. My hashtag that I use is #j9, as my name is Janine and the new division of JSW Group is J9 Lifestyle that I am in the process of building. Branding is key and I want to try out a new hashtag that encompasses mindful business, entrepreneurism & lifestyle. #bizmind #mindfulpreneur #mindpreneur #mindfulfstyle. I am going to try these out like you did. I would like to know how you settled on using #mindfulmoment. Is Ashleigh Jai Hitchcock the one to ask?

Dhyana Eagleton Jun 30, 2017 4:01am

I like mindful moment because our entire life is nothing but a series of moments.
