The Choices I made to create my Dream Life & Where we can All Start.

IMG_4478

When I made the decision to leave my home in Toronto to go live in Costa Rica for three months, I got a lot of “you’re so lucky” and “I wish I could do that.”

Yes, I am fortunate to be at a time in my life where I am young, with nothing in particular tying me to one place. But I also chose to not be tied down.

I got a job as a virtual assistant when I knew nothing about being a virtual assistant—I just knew I wanted to be able to live and work where I please and support myself enough to focus on my writing.

We all face choices every day—many of us can make the kinds of choices which design our lives. We only exist under the limits of possibility that we believe to be there.

I was recently speaking with a family member, updating them on my life, telling them how I was so happy living in this small surf town. I wake up at 5 or 6 a.m. every day without an alarm, surf for a few hours at sunrise, work for multiple clients during the day, get back in the water at least once more before sunset and the day finishes off with a great meal cooked for or with friends.

It’s a beautiful time in my life.

This person’s response was, “Yes, but you’re on vacation, you’re not in reality.”

They couldn’t wrap their head around the possibility, the actuality, that this is my reality.

This is my life.

This is what I’ve chosen: work, play, lifestyle. I’ve chosen what gives me joy.

We have the power to either limit or push ourselves. We can outgrow our beliefs about what we are capable of doing.

We are not bound by what other people think we should be doing.

Unhappy with where you are or what you are doing? Believe and choose differently.

You are qualified to work your dream job. You are capable and deserving of your dreams. This does not mean you have to quit your current job, get into debt and be irresponsible. You can start small. Redefine the term “weekend warrior.” Live and work and support yourself during the week and do what you love on the weekends to start.

We have as much time as we create for ourselves.

I work multiple jobs and find at least an hour or two every day to write. It took me months to work up the courage to quit my city job, but only weeks to find a volunteer position in Costa Rica that has allowed me to live here with minimal expenses.

There are ways to create the life of our dreams. We just have to figure out what matters the most and design our life around it.

Get clear. Write it down.

What are your core values in life? Do you need more structure or freedom? What climate do you want to live in? What kind of work do you want to do? What kind of space do you need to pursue the hobbies you want to pursue? Want mountains, ocean, or both?

Get even more detailed…

What kinds of people will surround you? Will your house have large windows, high or low ceilings? What colour will the pillows on your couch be?

Figure out what it is that you want.

Believe that what you desire is possible.

Believe that your idea of possibility is smaller than what actually is.

Now choose to chase that possibility.

Be stubborn as f*ck in the pursuit of your dreams.

We are all worthy of living in joy.
