On this, the autumn equinox, I was baptized in a shower of early autumn leaves as I walked my son to school.

The air had a little bite, and the wind was showing the first signs of bluster. Every part of me comes alive, and my inner child in my happy heart is clapping her hands in glee.

This is autumn: season of hoodies, bonfires, crisp apples, crunching leaves, bright foliage, apple cider, hot chocolate, simmering soups and stews, festivals, fairs, and merry-making with costumes. It’s my favorite time of year, and I relish every moment of it.

Last year, I presented you with “13 Atmospheric Reads for Autumn.” I love to get into the spirit of the season with seasonal reading—and in that spirit, I now offer you a brand new selection of atmospheric reads! May they delight and benefit you!

13 More Books You Should Read This Fall.

1. The Harry Potter Series, by J.K. Rowling. Seriously, all seven books should make this list, so I’m adding the entire series to this list as my top pick to bring in the season.

2. Frankenstein, by Mary Shelley. Creepy graveyards, a mad scientist, and a monster come together to bring you this haunting and atmospheric tale.

3. Jane Eyre, by Charlotte Bronte. This moody read should definitely get us into the spirit of the season. If you haven’t read this classic, now’s the time!

4. The Hound of the Baskervilles, by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle. Sure, you could just watch Benedict Cumberbatch in BBC’s “Sherlock,” and there’s never a time when I won’t recommend that. But there’s nothing quite like the feel of a book in hand and turning the pages of a riveting mystery.

5. The Fall of the House of Usher, by Edgar Allan Poe. As we approach autumn and the Halloween season, Poe should always make the list for atmospheric—and chilling—reading.

6. Rebecca, by Daphne du Maurier. This is another classic—and yes, this has been made into a movie also. Readers, you’ll want this on your list!

7. The Cabinet of Curiosities, by Douglas Preston and Lincoln Child. This spine-tingling story should have you turning pages deep into the night.

8. The Night Circus, by Erin Morgenstern. This is a more modern tale that offers magic, mystery, and wonder—and it will help set the mood for the coming fall season.

9. Murder on the Orient Express, by Agatha Christie. This is coming out as a movie this fall and is a remake of a much older film based on this book. Read it now, before the movie comes out and ruins the surprise ending!

10. A Separate Peace, by John Knowles. I read this years before it made my school reading list, but I love this story! It’s set at a school for boys and gives us an insightful look at friendships and their complications.

11. The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde, by Robert Louis Stevenson. This is a classic for a reason. There are some classic books that are just too good not to read, and this one is a great read for autumn!

12. The Shadow of the Wind, by Carlos Ruiz Zafon. This tale is one meant for bibliophiles, and it has the perfect atmosphere for fall reading.

13. In a Dark, Dark Wood, by Ruth Ware. I had just finished reading The Woman in Cabin 10, when I noticed that other friends were also reading Ruth Ware. I immediately contacted my library and secured my copy of In a Dark Dark Wood. Each page was deliciously chilling, and I avidly turned them until there were no more to turn. Anything by Ruth Ware gets my recommendation!

I could go on! This list should get you started and get all of us in the mood for gorgeous fall weather and All Hallows Eve fun. With a mix of classic and modern day treasures, this list should get you through the next few weeks. And, be sure to refer back to last year’s list for 13 more! Enjoy!
