The Microbiome Test that shows what’s Really Going On Inside your Gut. {Partner}

This is a post written by BIOHM—an elephant partner. We’re honored to work with anyone who is this dedicated to offering a straightforward and painless way to investigate our gut issues, and then help us heal them. ~ Ed.

Being the scientist that named the mycobiome, it’s fair to say that Dr. Ghannoum knows a thing or two about your gut’s microbiome.

That’s why, in 2016, the global medical community reacted with awe when he published his discovery that disease-causing bacteria and fungi were working together to wreak havoc in our guts. They do this by creating digestive biofilms that build up along the intestinal wall, disturbing the balance of the gut’s microbiome.

His work not only revealed the devastating effect that bacteria and fungi in the gut could have for Crohn’s patients (the population he studied in his clinical trial), but also the tremendous implications for anyone dealing with gut health issues.

This wasn’t the first time Dr. Ghannoum made a splash in the scientific world. Not only is he the scientist who named the mycobiome (the fungal community in our body), he’s published over 400 papers, and his work has been cited over 18,000 times by other scientists.

But of all of his research, he considers his discovery about gut fungi and bacteria working together to be his most important work to date.

However, publishing his findings wasn’t enough for Dr. Ghannoum. He wanted to translate his findings into something actionable that could help consumers dealing with gut issues.

In fact, after his findings went public, he heard from thousands of people across the world, suffering from a whole range of digestive issues.

That’s why he created the BIOHM Gut Report.

Your gut transformation begins here with this kit!

With just a few taps on their phone, consumers can now order an at-home test to have their microbiome sequenced by the same labs Dr. Ghannoum uses for his groundbreaking NIH (National Institutes of Health) clinical trials.

In addition, Dr. Ghannoum’s test gives consumers information on something that has been almost completely overlooked by other microbiome tests—the fungi in your gut.

“Gut microbiome sequencing is very much like probiotics. Everyone else seems to only talk about bacteria, ignoring fungi in the gut,” says Dr. Ghannoum.

“As a scientist studying the microbiome, it was pretty logical to me that consumers should have the ability to know about both the bacteria and fungi in their guts, if they wanted to get a holistic picture of what was going on in their digestive tracts.”

And with one of the largest clinical fungi collections in the world, with over 30,000 species, Dr. Ghannoum’s labs house unrivaled expertise when it comes to sequencing fungi.

“I’ve been fortunate enough to build a world-class team that’s been sequencing bacteria and fungi for a long time. It’s exciting that we’re now able to allow consumers a way to directly access that expertise,” says Dr. Ghannoum

So how does the BIOHM Gut Report work?

Well, it’s actually pretty simple.

Once you order the test, BIOHM (the microbiome company Dr. Ghannoum founded based on his discovery) sends you a kit with everything you need.

The kit includes a self-contained swab that you use to submit a small fecal sample. Once sampling is completed, you send it back in a self-addressed envelope with postage already paid (that’s included in the kit), and you drop it in the mail.

From there, your sample goes directly to BIOHM’s labs for analysis. Once the sequencing process is completed, BIOHM creates a report that shows not only the various bacteria and fungi present in your gut, but the specific levels of each of those species. Along with the report, you also receive a handbook that explains the significance of each of the strains found in your gut.

Since launching this past year, Dr. Ghannoum has been amazed at the response, with consumers across the country using the BIOHM Gut Report to sequence their gut’s microbiome. In fact, in just that short period of time, Dr. Ghannoum has generated more microbiome data, than he did in a decade of clinical trials.

“I’ve been studying bacteria and fungi for over 40 years, and I can honestly say that seeing my research come to life in such an important way has been one of the most gratifying things I’ve ever done,” says Dr. Ghannoum.

After such a crazy year, we asked Dr. Ghannoum what he’s excited about in the near future. “Honestly? A long cruise I am taking with my wife for our 40th anniversary!”

I think we can all agree, it’s a well-deserved break for a scientist trailblazing the way in the microbiome.
