*Whether astrology is science or magic, we’re open to most things, if they may be of benefit. ~ Ed.

We all have been somewhere—but we are all ultimately challenged to go somewhere next.

While not all of us will take steps to get in touch with our past lifetimes, it is insightful to see what our astrology has to reveal about it. One of the most beautiful things about our planetary story is that it contains a combination of both the past and present.

Our astrology contains several markers that point to our karmic wheel. It’s always in motion and pushing the themes and experiences of what our souls want to develop. One of the most important markers in our astrology are how the moon’s nodes operate. These special points are karmic indicators that reveal where we’ve been and where we’re supposed to go next. They help us to discover what we know, as well as what new discoveries are in store to help master new lessons.

The moon’s nodes can work as our own personal advisors, which can be rather useful in times of uncertainty. These personal indicators help us point to both our past and future. Awareness of their message can get us a little closer to answering all those future-related questions we love to ask.

Their placement in our own personal astrology reveals what we should pursue as well as what skills we’ve already developed in past lifetimes. That kind of knowledge can ultimately help us attain our soul’s goals.

The moon’s nodes consist of both the north node and the south node. Each is important and should be looked at in order to gain a better understanding of our life path, as well as why we are here.

The north node is what we’re learning, which can sometimes take a few lifetimes. It shows us where we are ultimately headed or what our future direction needs to be.

The purpose of our life and what we should ultimately be learning is revealed when we look deeper into the north node. I always think of the north node as a lucky spot in our astrology. When it’s sparked in just the right way, it can help push us along and create some sort of opportunity that gets us to where we are supposed to be. Following the path of our north node will give us the most fulfillment out of life. It’s not a perfect science, per say, and we’re all going to stumble and fall in finding the right way; however, the good news is that no one is going to fail when it comes to meeting up with our personal destiny.

The south node is what we’ve already mastered in past lifetimes, in addition to all the karmic baggage that’s developed.

These skills, traits, and insights that stem out of our south node are always with us. Sometimes, those are good things and other times, they aren’t. They have been developed, learned, and refined over the course of many lifetimes. Experiences of the past tie us into everything that our south node represents. Knowing those soul strengths and weaknesses can help us tap into valuable resources, as well as subconscious defaults that create our current realities.

The place where the nodes operate in our personal astrology fall directly in-line with our soul’s development. From a time perspective, an important factor surrounding the nodes is how they move. The nodes are always moving backward or in retrograde—whereas everything else usually moves forward. This is suggestive of the importance of their theme of looking back.

Pursuing our north node objectives are what gets us the most out of life—but it takes time to develop these traits.

The honest truth is that it’s actually easiest for us to revert back into our “south node ways.” That’s what we know best! Setbacks in life can easily push us to revert into our old, south node ways a little too quickly. It’s those decisions we need to make in our hardest moments that can prevent us from learning new things. Fear and lack of motivation make it much easier to pursue the path of least resistance with the south node.

Sticking with easy won’t give us life fulfillment however. Anything worthwhile usually comes along with a need to work hard at it.

For personal insight, here’s as a quick look at some of the meanings of north and south node placements:

Discovering more about yours can help you learn more about your soul’s karmic mission.

Here’s a free calculator to help reveal where the nodes are living in each of our personal astrology charts.

Once you enter your birth data, you can see the house and sign where your north node is. Keep in mind that the south node lives directly opposite the north node and will not be visible in this chart view. However, it’s important to understand what both the sign and house where our nodes live reveal. We have to blend the characteristics of both themes in order to gain the most understanding. Have your birthday, exact time of birth, and location of where you were born for better accuracy.

As an example, my north node is in my ninth house in the sign of Libra. I would read for what the themes are for both Libra and the ninth house.

*Remember the key points of the nodes: our north node is where we are heading, and the south node is where we’ve been.

North node in Aries or the first house—south node in Libra or the seventh house:
Our greatest growth will come from developing our own personality and power. We’ve been too dependent on others in the past and now it’s time for us to shine on our own!

North node in Taurus or the second house—south node in Scorpio or the eighth house:
Our greatest fulfillment will come through enjoying our possessions or pleasures. In the past, we’ve worked hard at helping others find their value and self-worth and now is the time for us to enjoy them ourselves!

North node in Gemini or the third house—south node in Sagittarius or the ninth house:
Our greatest growth will come through mental stimulation or expressions. In the past, we might have been too emotional in our thinking and now is the time to be logical and rational.

North node in Cancer or the fourth house—south node in Capricorn or the 10th house:
Our greatest fulfillment will come through taking care of our family and home. In the past, we may have been a workaholic or focused too much on things outside of our family—now’s the time where we’re called to focus on our home life.

North node in Leo or the fifth House—south node in Aquarius or the 11th house:
Our greatest growth will come through being creative and gaining recognition. In the past, we may not have accepted approval or acknowledgment easily and now is the time for us to take it willingly.

Our greatest fulfillment will come through our daily work or service to others. In the past, we may have focused on impractical matters and now is the time to be practical and set our fantasies aside.

North node in Libra or the seventh house—south node in Aries or the first house:
Our greatest growth will come through close and personal partnerships. In the past, we may have been a lone operator and perhaps too selfish to work with others. Now is the time for us to learn how to compromise and cooperate.

North node in Scorpio or the eighth house—south node in Taurus or the second house:
Our greatest fulfillment will come through giving up our wants for material possessions and helping others find their worth. In the past, we may have been too attached to our wealth and pleasures. Now is the time to for us to help others.

North node in Sagittarius or the ninth house—south node in Gemini or the third house:
Our greatest growth will come through obtaining higher knowledge. In the past, we may have been skeptical and now is our chance to soak up new ideas in order to have a broader view of the world.

North node in Capricorn or the third house—south node in Cancer or the fourth house:
Our greatest fulfillment will come through our career. In the past, we may have led a personal and closed existence and now is the time for us to shine in the public eye and put ourselves in the limelight.

North node in Aquarius or the 11th house—south node in Leo or the fifth house:
Our greatest growth will come through helping society or special groups and organizations. In the past, we were too ego-driven and now is the time for us to help the greater good rather than feed our ego.

North node in Pisces or the 12th house—south node in Virgo or the sixth house:
Our greatest fulfillment will come through helping others in a profound way. In the past, we were a master of organization of our daily tasks and our own self- improvement.
