How to Afford to Travel the World: A Few Tips

Travelling around the world is something all of us would like to do. Although there are many reasons why many of us give up on this idea I have to say it’s possible if you really want to do it.

When you decide to go travel around the world one of the first things you would like to know is how much it would cost you. A quick search online will give numerous results on how to backpack for $15 per day. But what you really need is to find the some valuable tips to make this possible.

At the beginning you have to set your budget. This means that if you are travelling with someone you can set up a specific number per day. In our case we are going to set the cost at $100 per day for two people. The cost would be different depending on the location you are in but it will definitely provide at least basic level of comfort and decent food.

After you set the number, you have to make a plan. Please note that you can skip some steps in case you can afford it, but in my case these are the steps I have taken to make the world travel possible. Let’s see what you can do as well.

Sell your car

I have thought a bit about this and decided it would be a good idea to sell my car. After a few days I managed to sell it on Craigslist for $12,500. Easy money, right? I know some of you will think this was a bad idea but I helped me move in the right direction and make some more life changing decisions.

Get a higher salary

I have been working in an advertising agency for a while. Although the salary there is good, some of my colleagues managed to earn much more from freelance business. So, I decided that now it would be the best time to quit my job and get a higher-paying one. The decision to travel the world really helped me here. After a few months, I was able to land a contract and quit my full time job. Since then I earned double my salary. So, it was a risk worth taking.

Price shopping

When you have to travel by plan or rent a car it is a good idea to check some less popular fare comparison websites. Some of these are Cleartrip or Europcar, so make sure to check them out. For example, I normally book airline tickets through the carrier’s website. However, in some cases I made some big savings by booking the same tickets through some third-party websites.

Go get your credit cards points

Now it’s the perfect time to earn rewards points from your credit cards. Signing up for a Chase Sapphire, Capital One Venture or a Barclay Arrival card was a great decision because we managed to save almost $7,000 on airline and other travel costs. Pay attention to close all the cards when you come home to avoid annual fees.

Ask for help or discount

Don’t be afraid to ask for help or discount. You will be surprised how often you will get a discount only if you ask for one. The chances to get one are even higher if you offer to write an excellent review in return. Just make sure to keep your promise.

Tiny acts of kindness

During the trip be ready for some surprises. When someone asks me what was the most surprising thing about my trip I always say that I was pleasantly surprised how generous people are. While you are traveling and exploring different cultures you will see that people are often generous to people from other countries. For example, if you have someone living in a different country and have lost contact with them, don’t think they don’t want to see you. In most cases these people will be delighted to see you and even be your hosts. Don’t be afraid to get in touch with your parent’s friends you haven’t seen in ages or a cousin you haven’t seen since you were kids. Even some new friends you make during your trip can be generous and offer you to spend a night or two at their places. At the end of the trip you will be surprised how much these tiny acts of kindness saved you money.

Live like locals do

In most cases when we go on a vacation we spend more money than usual. This is because we want to eat at specific places and we want to visit this and that, and we want to do all of that in a short period of time. The idea here is to live like locals do. You can cook at your place and spend more time getting to know the place you are in. There is no need to spend money on sightseeing and tickets to museums and similar. Try the local cuisine. It’s often much cheaper than trying something which is not that local.

Final words

If you follow the tips given above you will be able to live quite well during your trip. You will sleep at clean places, eat well, and try different types of transportation. Maybe you will miss some things tourists normally see, but believe me – you will experience all the places in a much deeper and better way.

So, get your headphones, listen to your favorite music and start planning your trip. And one more thing – when you are on a strict budget you will start to take care of your decisions, time and money. And you will definitely appreciate and remember all the good things that have happened during your adventure.
