“Your core values are the deeply held beliefs that authentically describe your soul.” ~ John C. Maxwell
Are you clear on your core values?
Do you know how to discover your core values? Not too long ago, I was at a workshop and one of the things we discussed was leadership values. Talk about enlightening!
What brings you pleasure?
Take a minute to think about all the things that bring you happiness and joy. Then, take another minute to write them down – I’ll be here making my own list, so take your time =)
Done? Good.
Here’s my list…
- Spending time with Jimmy
- Cuddling with the doggies
- Hanging out with good friends & my coaching tribes
- Hanging out with horses
- A steaming cup of coffee
- Summer mornings on the patio
- Me-time
- Deep, meaningful conversations
- Coaching my clients
- Flexibility
- Reading
- Writing
- Sewing
- Daydreaming
I could keep going…still, that’s not what you’re here for, am I right?
What values align with those pleasures?
Love, connection, kindness, authenticity, alignment, vulnerability & reliability
These are the values that align closely with my love of spending time with Jimmy, the doggies, friends, my coaching tribes, and horses. A big part of that revolves around the deep, meaningful conversations that come out of some of those relationships.
Passion, purpose, learning, empowerment, alignment, service & vulnerability
These are the values that align most closely with creating a new career as well as coaching and being coached.
Inspiration, solitude, & personal growth
These are the values most closely aligned with what I enjoy on my own – whether that ́s reading, daydreaming, writing or doing anything I really enjoy, really.
Creativity
This values aligns with my everything from sewing and stitching to creating my new coaching career.
Self Awareness & Spirituality
These are the values that align closely with my special morning time on the patio in the summer, my daydreaming, me-time and the silence I enjoy with my morning coffee.
If you need some help coming up with the core values most aligned with your personal pleasures, here’s a list of 500 to get you started.
How do you live a life that aligns with your core values?
In a nutshell, do MORE of those things that bring you pleasure and less of those things that don ́t…
If you want to take it a step further, you could even write up a list of those things that you really don’t enjoy, and then figure out a way to stop doing them altogether.
Another fu*#ing opportunity for growth…
If the things on your “unenjoyable” list include people, tasks or situations that you avoid because they make you feel uncomfortable, well, you should probably take a closer look at those. Yep, this is yet another fu*#ing opportunity for growth! And, if you need some support, I know a coach who can help you with that =)
