How can one start their spiritual journey? Does everyone get a Guru in life?

Let’s start by comprehending a scenario…

Imagine you are trapped in a labyrinth and you have no clue whatsoever how to get out of it. You try many paths, but none have worked so far. Just then a guide, who is familiar with the entire area inside out, happens to pass by and seeing you in trouble, helps you easily come out of the maze. When this happens, know that you’ve met a Guru, who’s shown you the way to come out of the trap.

The one who knows is ‘Guru’

Guru is someone in whom we repose trust and keep following. Guru is like our eyes, with whose help we can see the way forward. Guru gives us the light, with the use of which we are able to move ahead. Guru is an experienced guide who safely takes us to the next mile.

The same applies to our spiritual journey as well…

Spiritual journey means the journey to our real home!

It is the journey to come out of the trap of all worldly sufferings and imaginary happiness, and attain the real bliss of the Self (the Pure Soul). But unfortunately we are ignorant and unaware of the address to our real home, the path to our real Self.

So how do we start off on our spiritual journey then?

We cannot walk on the spiritual path without the One who is already familiar with the path; who has the vision to show us the right path, and the divine power to protect us and make us walk on the path such that we are able to reach our goal. Thus, to get started on our spiritual journey, we need a spiritual Guru – a ‘Satguru’, who has attained the bliss of the Self and is living to make others attain the same.

Generally, people refer to a Guru with a very high conduct as Satguru. However, really, although the Guru may be very commendable and may have a good inner balance too in matters of food, worldly interactions and personal character, but until he has attained Self-realization he cannot be called a Satguru.

Whom can we call Satguru?

There are two kinds of Gurus:

  1. One is in the form of a guide, who is called ‘Guru’. He is someone we follow. If we come to a fork on the road, he guides us, ‘No, not this road. Take that road.’ Accordingly, we walk on that road. Guru is always in front of us. He does not let us sway away from the route.
  2. The other is a ‘Satguru’! A Satguru is someone who liberates us from all worldly sufferings as he is liberated himself. There, we do not have to use our brain or intellect; we just remain sincere to Him. The degree upto which we are sincere with Him is the degree of peace we experience within. In the language of the scriptures, ‘Sat’ is the Soul (Aatma, the Self)! So the Guru who has attained the Soul is a Satguru!

Not all Gurus have Atma-Gnan (knowledge of the Soul)

So there is a difference between a Guru and a Satguru!

The knower of the Soul (Aatma-Gnani, the Self-Realized) is the Satguru, for he has experienced the Self. The One who continuously remains as the eternal element – the Soul – is a Satguru! The Gnani Purush is a Satguru. Without a living and directly present Satguru, one can never attain liberation.

For attaining the spiritual goal of ultimate liberation, we need a living Satguru (Gnani Purush)

The need for a Guru starts from the time we begin school to the time we reach the door of spirituality. Guru can take us all the way upto spirituality but we cannot enter into the gates of Atma-Gnan (knowledge of the Self) without the SatGuru. Aatma-Gnan means to be in front of the Self. And it is only the Satguru who can bring us in front of the Self.

Satguru (Gnani) is the supreme Soul in a human form. He is not the owner of his body, mind, or speech.

After surrendering to such Satguru, we do not have to do anything else

When a child is born to a mother, the child does not have to do anything, isn’t it?! Similarly, we too are a child before Satguru.

To whomever we surrender our intellect; we attain the energies of that person. If we have truly surrendered, we shall certainly attain everything of His. It is like when we join the two tanks with a pipe, the other tank’s water rises to the same level in some time. Such is the power of surrender!

The law of Nature is such that sincere seekers naturally meet whatever they seek

I too, like you was seeking for Guru (Satguru), who could help me attain ultimate liberation. And Nature one day placed me in front of Him, without an advance intimation to know about Him, you may visit our bio for the link.

So when and where will you meet the Satguru cannot be said; you simply ought to maintain an earnest intention of seeing Him soon. When your intention is pure, consistent and sincere, you are bound to meet him for sure! So daily 10 minutes, just pray heartily to the Lord for the same. And until then, remain humble in every situation; make the whole world your Guru and daily you’ll get to learn something worthwhile that shall help you progress in life.
