Self-love, a journey to healing

Today, I woke up to heal my wounds.

What is self-love? I have often asked myself, but never really had the time to think it through because I was busy loving other people and forgot that, I, too was worthy of love as much.

Then the very same question popped up again when I started realizing that I was losing connection with myself. I was struggling with my own identity. I didn’t know who I was anymore. I remembered the self-hate speech I was feeding myself with. “You’re ugly, unworthy, you don’t deserve this or that, etc… “ I would go on and on for hours, every day, until these thoughts found refuge in my soul, body and mind. The mirror that was once my best friend, became my worst enemy and it hurt. And when it hurt, I hit rock bottom and I decided to change all my thoughts, and change everything to make things better for myself, like it once was.

I switched the game and slowly changed. It wasn’t easy but I had to save me from myself before it was too late. I had to do it. I had to push myself. Whenever the self hate speech would come up, I’d ignore them, replace them with positive ones. I started doing what I really loved. I started doing things that brought me happiness however little they may be. I traced a path for myself. A path to healing. Because if you don’t love yourself enough, how do you make it to the summit ? How can you expect others to love you when you don’t even love yourself ?

Loving ourselves is a whole process. It doesn’t happen overnight. It does take time. It’s a journey with its ups and downs. It’s not all bubblegum and cotton candy. It’s getting to know yourself all over again. It’s neither selfish nor narcissistic. It’s very easy to love others unconditionally but when it comes to us, it always comes with conditions. « If I do this, then I’ll be happy or I deserve love.. » but that’s not right.

Let’s accept the imperfectly perfect mess that we are and embrace ourselves. Let’s love ourselves unconditionally today, tomorrow and every day for the rest of our lives. Choose self-investment and self-love because you’re the biggest project you’ll ever work on !
