This video of Zach Williams singing to the prisoners of Harding Prison grips my soul.
It’s beautiful and heartbreaking at the same time.
It’s breathtaking.
Read the lyrics, and if they touch you, I encourage you to watch the video.
Watching the prisoners receive these lyrics of truth and wisdom feels like an awakening. They are good enough and whatever they did is forgiven.
I was once down and dirty and felt like a prisoner. When I hear him sing the very same thoughts I’ve had about myself it feels riveting.
I have felt alone and ashamed and didn’t know how to find the bridge to freedom. In Alcoholics Anonymous they provide inspiring promises, and the goal of a sober life is to feel “Happy, joyous, and free.”
But, why wasn’t it working for me?
I believe what he is singing about is true.
Fear is lying to us, and telling us as young children, teens, young adults, and adults that we don’t measure up, we aren’t good enough, and that we will stumble and fall.
I carried these feelings and words around in my brain all of my life, until I started talking openly about it, and I realized I am not alone.
Other people have the same feelings and struggles.
We portray an image to the outside world of being “fine,” but the truth is we are all screwups to some degree.
Let it out into the open.
Fear is a liar: a good reminder for the times we are currently traveling through.
Peace is all I crave these days. Peace in my mind, peace in my community and family.
I truly pray that we can all live in peace. These times are unprecedented.
This generation is seeking more, talking more, and listening to the voices who are supposed to know more than us, but we find ourselves questioning—more aware and not settling for the status quo.
I am proud of us.
I see change happening little by little.
See if this song resonates with you—breaking down our fears one by one:
When he told you you’re not good enough
When he told you you’re not right
When he told you you’re not strong enough
To put up a good fight
When he told you you’re not worthy
When he told you you’re not loved
When he told you you’re not beautiful
That you’ll never be enough
Fear, he is a liar
He will take your breath
Stop you in your steps
Fear he is a liar
He will rob your rest
Steal your happiness
Cast your fear in the fire
‘Cause fear he is a liar
When he told you were troubled
You’ll forever be alone
When he told you you should run away
You’ll never find a home
When he told you you were dirty
And you should be ashamed
When he told you you could be the one
That grace could never change
Fear he is a liar
He will take your breath
Stop you in your steps
Fear he is a…
