How important is it to live in the present and not worry about the future?

There is never a tomorrow. No one in the world has seen tomorrow. Whenever we look, it is always today. When there is no such thing as tomorrow, then what is the point? The present time is the now. The time gone by is yesterday which is the past, and tomorrow is in the hands of Nature. Therefore, we ought to remain only in the present; just in the present time which is now.

Lord too has asked us to remain in the present only. It is according to the law.

Bliss is lost by entering into the future

The whole world is entangled in worrying about the future, ‘What will happen to me? What if this will happen or if that will happen?’ People ask, ‘We have to think about the future, don’t we?’ The answer is, think, but only about the upcoming 3-4 days. Do you have to think about 20 years from now? You can see to it when the time comes; at least enjoy your today! God has said, “Enjoy what is present in front of you. Do not worry about that which is not present.” This means we must stay in the present moment of time and enjoy what we have.

There is happiness in the present, infinite happiness! This happiness is ruined by thinking about the future. By worrying, the taste of today’s happiness gets lost. We are not able to enjoy the present happiness and the future too is ruined. Therefore, worrying about future is not helpful in any way; it is detrimental. Instead of worrying about future, we can improve the present by doing whatever we have to do right now, living in the present moment!

Living in the present is the right thing

When we go out, how many feet ahead do we look and walk – about 100 feet, 200 feet or closer? Why don’t we look that far?… so that an accident does not occur and we can smoothly keep going further and further. If we try to look too far, we will miss out on the step close to us and stumble. So, it is important to stay in normality.

Only attend to the present moment. The habit of the mind is such that it remains engrossed either in the past or the future. This reduces the energy of the mind and it is unable to focus on the present task in hand with its full potential. To be in the present means, suppose you are writing the accounts, your full concentration is in it. Therefore, accuracy is maintained. It is when the mind roams in future that errors will occur in your accounting. Those who live in the present do not make a single mistake and they have no worries.

We may make plans. For example, if we want to go to Mumbai on the 25th and to Baroda on the 28th, we have that in our vision. We set our goal, and then keeping it in sight, walk step by step towards it with the mind rooted in the present. What is important is that we remain aware in each step we take. This eliminates the possibilities of making mistakes.

What is the point in worrying about something that is not under our control?

What is going to happen in the next moment is in the hands of the scientific circumstantial evidences. For instance, normally every year on June 15th, the circumstances come together and it rains. Then, wouldn’t it be wrong on our part to worry about rain in the month of March?

Now, suppose the circumstance of time is right, but the circumstance of clouds has not been met on June 15 yet, then how can it rain? Only when the clouds are present, the timing is right, there is lightening and when all the other evidences come together, it will rain. All the circumstances must come together. Only when all the scientific circumstantial evidences come together does an event take place. Such is the law of Nature. Hence, the control is not in our hands.

Man is dependent on the circumstances, but he believes that he is doing it. Even the portion of whatever he ‘does’ is also dependent upon circumstances. If one of these circumstances were to fall short, then he will not be able to do that particular work. Eg. If one’s hand gets fractured, he will not be able to perform the action that requires the hand, isn’t it? So, he is dependent on the circumstance of the hand being fine. If the hand fails, he is not able to ‘do’ the job. Hence, there is no point in thinking about the future. It is not at all under our control. Only worries will occur, anxiety will occur, and this is certainly not helping. This is not scientific way at all.

We worry for no reason. When it’s time to sleep, the eyes will close by itself. Waking up has brought its time. We must instead simply observe the circumstances and see what they are. Once the circumstances come together, the work gets accomplished. This world is not to worry about. If you look at it exactly, this world is not worth worrying about, it never was and it will never be.

Therefore, one should remain in the present. The one, who remains in the present does not need to be aware of anything else. That indeed is considered to be the highest degree of pure applied awakened awareness of the Self. But how?… for it is easier said than done!

Knowing ‘Who am I’ is the final solution

It is possible for us to live in the present when we attain the real knowledge of ‘who am I’ and ‘who is the doer’. Worries cannot go without acquiring Self-Realization. We should know who we really are. Once we know, ‘Who am I?’ we will never have any worries. And this, we can know only from a Living Gnani Purush!

Yes, meeting the Gnani is the only circumstance which helps us realize our real Self. Gnani has the divine spiritual power to separate the ‘I’ and ‘My’ in less than one hour’s time. That is why Gnani is said to be the pure circumstance for acquiring liberation.

Param Pujya Dada Bhagwan says, “Liberation calls for no efforts if one is fortunate enough to come in connection with a Gnani.” So, hope you meet the circumstance of meeting such Gnani Purush who can set us free, soon, very soon!
