“My dear, sweet Dylan,
If I had a penny for every time I imagined who you’d be when you turned 21, I’d be rich. Dad and I are so proud of you. There will never be a time in your life that we aren’t. Our enthusiasm doesn’t come from what you do but how you do it. You have exceeded our wildest expectations. You’ve taken every opportunity and run with it. You were a good investment. We are behind you 100% as you prepare for “the real world”.
We want you to do something you are passionate about. It’s important to be honest with yourself about what you want and what you need. They are 2 very different things. Every moment you live your truth, you get closer to your future. Every person you go out of your way to connect with, every lecture you hear, every project you participate in, every new friend you make~ these experiences pave your way.
Stay hungry for life. Continue to try new things. Always put yourself in the middle of good people who do good things. Stretch and reach but know your edge. Take a good look in the mirror every morning and be sure you recognize that person. If something’s off, figure it out. Redirect. Be so comfortable in your own skin that doing what’s right for you comes naturally. Let your light shine. Share your wisdom generously. Go out of your way to be who you are even when it’s uncomfortable. Roll out your yoga mat regularly. Meet people who will make you better. Seek people who can teach you something new. Give back. Be receptive to life’s lessons. Learn from your mistakes and remember what you did well.
Always remember where you came from, and that your family is your circle. Take time to make good choices, give yourself 24 hours minimum to make big decisions and even longer if you have the time. A bad decision can have lifelong consequences. It’s just not worth it. If you need to bounce an idea off of someone, call home. If you’ve lost your way, know who is in your life that can lead you back. You are extraordinary in many ways. You are wise, you are kind, you are generous. Value those qualities in yourself as much as we do. I tell my friends that you are the kindest human being I’ve ever known, and it’s true. Look at old pictures, take new ones, cherish old friends, and always have room at the table for one more.
Cheers to you on your 21st birthday. May you get wiser and more certain with every passing year. May you have every joy that life has to offer and may we share in that joy with you. Our gift to you is a reminder that time is everything in life. Always make time for things that matter. Use your time well. Reflect on the good times, grow from the challenging times. Let time be your compass in life. How you spend it and who you spend it with is your journey. Choose wisely. Choose from your heart, then check in with your head. Always know that there will never be a time that we don’t love you without condition. You can set your watch to that.
We love you Bub,
Mom and Dad
