The Artist : Busting the stereotypes and lies that keep us down

Awakening – the moment the creative emerges from the hidden space deep below

The first time I attended university I was young and love struck and yearned to write .

I attended solely to hone this skill.

I was disillusioned and love struck and I left after a few semesters. I later returned as a single mother much more grounded and mature. I was ready!
I studied psychology and social work as I knew I needed to create a steady income.

My father laughed saying I managed to graduate with a degree in which all my electives were “ basket weaving” his definition of fine art classes.

I fell in love with learning and the joy of writing.
I laughed with my father and his teasing as I knew he supported. I knew my father supported me whatever path I decided. My own creative struggles came from an internal source.

It is a challenge when you want to be a creative and society tells you that artists are “ lazy, poor, addicted, and other derogatory names.

This is ironic because artists are the ones that society goes to when the world needs inspiration and healing.

How does a creative break free and follow their passion even when the world seems against?

I believe that the first step is to come into your own.

As an idealist this has taken me a considerable amount of time.

This takes surrendering- a letting go! When we do this we let go of the “ masks” we wear and we step into our “ authentic creative self” the one that shows up and creates without thinking or worrying about acceptance.

We create and release and repeat. We open up to creative life force and let it flow through.

I  personally have struggled with fears of  selling out and the fear of relinquishing creative control and being completely open with world.

Stepping out as an artist requires that we create regardless of anxiety and fears of rejection. When we do this in the face of society’s stigma’s regarding the artist we are stigma busting and we are able to do what brings us joy and what we are wired for “creating”.

We can be dependable, hardworking, sober, stable and artists.

We can be grounded, resilient and strong.

The myth of the struggling artist is an archetype that has been created. We artists are able to transform emotion and experience into art and this is “ magic” The truth is all humans can struggle this has nothing to do with art and creativity.

The good news it is never too late!
If you are a creative that has struggled to let your light shine this piece is for you !

Imagine for a moment that you are able to wake up and be unburdened by negative thoughts and a critical voice that holds you back? How will you feel?

How would you act if this happened?

Would you begin?

Would this be a start?

We can start showing up for our artist self and slowly step by step shed the negative and in doing so we step into our bliss. It is a scary process this I will not deny and it won’t always be smooth. There will be dips and valleys and challenging times. This is life! The artist takes these moments and transforms.

Today and everyday this is my mission!
To just be and step into my creative Joy! Wishing you the same and together may artists create works that help and heal the world .

Namaste
