We want to tell stories, We write poems.

I am one of those people, who took up writing with the on-start of Corona and lockdown. Some others like me, started committing to some forms of art in Corona period, a time period which was opportunistic for art. There was a break from fast life, some time on hand, some compulsion to be alone with ourselves and lots of emotions on plate.

Here, I wish to focus on people who took up writing.

MAYA ANGELOU – ” We write for the same reason that we walk, talk, climb mountains or swim the oceans — because we can. We have some impulse within us that makes us want to explain ourselves to other human beings. That’s why we paint, that’s why we dare to love someone- because we have the impulse to explain who we are. Not just how tall we are, or thin… but who we are internally… perhaps even spiritually. There’s something, which impels us to show our inner-souls.”

People are more likely to write poems. If I note people surrounding me, I will see many of them are sharing their poems, some are sharing often, some on rare occasions, some write long and deep lines, some write short verses for fun and so on – I will find a lot of people trying their hands at writing poems.

ROBERT FROST – “Poetry is when an emotion has found its thought and the thought has found words.”

The simplest reason is, it seems easy. Many are not aware of the forms of the poetry and many do not care for it in the moment and so all of these poems are born. We often feel like sharing our feelings or telling some story and writing a poem seems an easier way out.

  • Form – Writing prose requires proper grammar, effort of sentence formation and some patience. Whereas, poems offer more flexibility in this area. If I wish to pen down my feelings in the heat of the moment, I would prefer to use words freely, without caring for grammatical rules, semantic sense and other things. And, all these factors make me enjoy the writing process and result is a piece of writing which resonates with the rush of my emotions. It is a quick and fun exercise.
  • Detailing & Precision – Writing prose often needs details and cohesion in content. And poetry offers the artistic freedom in this department. I can highlight or hide easily in a poem, there can be gaps, loose ends and open spaces in flow of information, that leaves some scope for imagination on the readers’ part. And rewards are sweeter for a writer, if readers are better engaged.
  • Comprehension – Last but not the least, writing prose requires a good level of understanding of the matter to be written. Whereas poems are seen as a pure piece of art, straight from the heart and with a focus on the feels.

For example, read the following lines

So far my ways go unwelcomed,

I am trying in hope,

A hope borrowed from somewhere,

To use and assure my mother,

Who must not know about my own killed one,

Gone without a funeral,

Because funerals can lead to phoenixes.

One can read the lines and can feel pain at various degrees as per their understanding, their imagination and some resonance with their own life experiences. So poem is more for the readers and less of the writers. If writer would have written a prose, he/she would have begun with the history of his/her struggle, some description of environment and surroundings and then would have explained how it all affected him/her and how he/she feels about the situation. So poem makes both the reader and the writer free. It gives the freedom to readers to feel as much as they want to, the scope of imagination is left wide open with use of less words and details, one can say canvas is left blank for the readers to paint as they would like to and poem provides the color palette to them. And, the writer is free from the burden to share everything so that it can make sense to the readers. Writer can just let it all out and wait for the readers to join him/her in the story and the efforts.

Here are some lines for you to read.

Also at funerals,

People do comforting,

But I am amongst the broken hearts,

Broken by none other than me,

Broken expectations.

They say we expect only from good,

And I wonder about bad beginnings,

It is scary to not know the good.

Is bad born from good ?

Because good things are followed by bad things,

And bad times are followed by good times,

So when I relax,

Do I pave a way for mistakes ?
