I use the term “Omnivorous Predator” in my nutrition education talks and writings. I want to bring this term to the mainstream. What is an omnivorous predator? I’m glad you asked. Since we humans are omnivorous beings as opposed to carnivorous or vegetarian, that is the easy word to describe. When it comes to the “predator”, I closely relate this to hunter/gatherer. I believe that in a sense humans have become scavengers of food. We go about our days eating subpar food on the run in the assumption that we are providing energy for our bodies. That is, scavenging available food, all to satisfy a false sense of energy requirements. There is a cost for this type of eating and is probably not the way humans were originally meant to consume nutrients. Ideally, food should be consumed in relaxation. Thoughts should be focused on eating, digesting and nourishing. There is also an emotional aspect of eating that I will save for another post.
Becoming a predator means being discriminating as opposed to being opportunistic in one’s food choices. It is all too easy to indiscriminately eat throughout the day, giving little thought to the actual ingredients. Education is key in becoming aware of potentially toxic foods. It is a toxic world out there. Eating is not simple like it once was when all food was good. It is our responsibility as stewards of our genes to be predators and be “picky eaters” by selecting the most natural and unmodified foods that we can seek out.
