I broke through the ground.
The sun called my name.
Through darkness and drowning
from pounding rain.
Beginning hidden, deep in a seed.
What brought me to life?
I can’t say,
but, I know I must breathe.
The shell cracked and I ached to grow.
Still in darkness,
in the Earth below
where life is unseen, unheard and unnoticed,
I ached and stretched,
“CLIMB, YOU KNOW THIS!”
I could feel the warmth
pulling me up,
higher and farther,
out of the dust.
And as I neared the break ,
between, above and beneath,
the earth gave way,
and I let out a scream.
I screamed
“FRREEEEEDDOOOOOMMMMM!!!!”
and the wind hit my face.
What is this new, brightened space?
I can see.
I can move.
I can feel.
It’s a sea,
of overwhelming emotion,
pouring over me.
Tears flow out freely.
My branches stretch wide.
My colorful glory unfolding
no longer doomed to hide.
Where my purpose was hidden
and my growth unseen
you see the flower in front of you,
but not the empty seed beneath.
Where I left it behind
and my roots dug in deeply,
they’re strong, they’re deep,
they cannot be plucked from me.
I’ll dance in the dew
and bask in the rain,
open to the sun
and rest after play.
Before my life ends
I only want to hear them say,
“She hurt for awhile and then she lived…everyday.”
