How to Quit the “Seeking Addiction.”

I wrote here recently about a relatively unknown but pervasive addiction I first recognized in myself many years ago and that is epidemic in the spiritual community: the addiction to seeking. Seeking addiction not only keeps us in struggle and suffering, it also prevents us from experiencing the freedom and peace we’re seeking. I was able to recognize and quit my own seeking addiction and have helped thousands of others quit theirs.

Moving beyond any addiction requires a certain amount of willingness and determination: there are things to do (and not do) that help or hinder our progress. But without a change in thinking, trying to quit an addiction can be like pushing rocks uphill: it’s harder than it needs to be.

The truth is that all addictions are vibrational habits that can be changed much more easily than we’ve been led to believe.

I no longer set things in stone by diagnosing, labeling and chaining myself and others to life-long issues, problems or maladies. Psychological diagnoses, physical illnesses, personality traits, and addictions, at their root, are always vibrational in nature. And when we understand how vibration works, over time we can learn to more deliberately manage and impact our vibration—with far more ease than we may have thought possible.

It’s a relief when our minds finally grasp that there is no dark energy, nor anything to clear, heal, fix, or get rid of! There is only vibration to acknowledge, accept, and allow to rise. It’s not complicated, and it requires no special props, rituals, secret knowledge, or endless processing.

The habit of spiritual seeking usually begins innocently enough. We seek relief from our pain and discomfort from outside sources, only to find that the relief is short-lived. Nevertheless, we become increasingly dependent on these outer things to feel better.

Once a habit is established, its pull is immense. Now we do it just because we did it. Law of Attraction causes us to do more of what we’ve been doing, until we decide otherwise.

So how did I quit my addiction to spiritual seeking?

Well, first of all, I was ready. All addictions make us dependent on outside things and sap our freedom. The good news is that being enslaved to anything creates a huge desire for freedom.

That desire had grown quite strong in me! It made me willing to try something new. Ultimately, being ready and willing made me able to stop looking for answers outside myself and go within.

Stepping off that hamster wheel of sessions and seeking and endless work allowed me to start reconnecting with myself. I made the decision to show up, as best I could, for whatever I was feeling and experiencing, and I became better at showing up for myself in the process. Grace helped.

From a purely physical perspective, at its core, all emotion is vibrational energy. Feelings exist on an emotional continuum—they’re all the same divine energy, just vibrating at different speeds. Uncomfortable feelings vibrate more slowly than feelings that felt better.

In a curious, free-flowing inner-environment, uncomfortable feelings simply indicate slower-moving vibration that wants to move. We don’t make them wrong but recognize they need the balm of our allowing and acceptance so that they can move.

When I was able to soften and gently meet whatever I was experiencing, I felt better; there was more spaciousness, ease and flow. Softening opened space so energy had room to move, and that felt better!

I practiced playing with vibration and started paying a little more attention to what I was thinking and feeling. I learned to soothe and show up for myself, and the need to avoid and resist uncomfortable feelings lessened.

Most importantly, I learned how to really feel—not on a story level but on a deeper vibrational level. I created a powerful method for diving in to feelings that allowed old, denser, slower-vibrating energy to more easily move and rise in vibration. When I lost my fear of feelings, I was free.

As long as I’d been seeking for freedom, it eluded me, because it really was right here and right now! I just needed to remember how to show up and claim it for myself.

Seeking is an addiction that keeps us out of our power. It soothes the mind to understand why this is and to begin to learn the language of vibration. As we become more fluent in the language and practice of vibration, we can quickly reclaim power. We become able to develop new vibrational habits!

Playing at the deeper level of vibration, it’s easy to experience how fluid things are. Nothing is set in stone! Everything is vibration, and vibration is quite easily changeable.

Savor this possibility!
