Reiki! Conjures up certain images and thoughts doesn’t it? Well it did for me a few years ago. With that in mind I wanted to share an account of Reiki from a young Reiki Master called Fenton Joseph — Zywicki.

Fenton is 32, from the UK now living in Spain with his beautiful wife and little girl. He was introduced to the concept of Reiki a long time ago and is now using it to teach at his retreat in Spain and also work remotely with clients in other parts of the world.

Fenton has created his own rules with Reiki and coined his own approach called “Native Reiki” he is a strong believer in learning all you can then un-learning it all to make up your own mind, create a healing journey that works for you. He said right of the bat “Reiki for me has been a place to learn, ground myself and create a foundation for healing.”

Sam: Could I ask where you personally think you are on your healing journey at the moment?

Fenton: I think I’m about 3–4 years to my journey on the “Right” path lets say. I’m now Im working towards the things I should be, I know how to harness my energy, well not fully! But efficiently. I feel I’m very much at the point where doing, seeing, collaborating and living presently is where my personal development has rocketed.

Sam: Has being away from the city helped your journey at all?

Fenton: Being away does give you some more space to be honest with yourself about who you really are and what you want to be. I can be back in the city and still stay grounded now, Reiki has some great techniques you can do anywhere, anytime so I would be on the bus meditating, only for 5 minutes and it helped dispel any anxiety. You just need to get over people looking at you skeptically whilst you make weird breathing noises!

We talked about how we can all start using our journey time for grounding ourselves and mindfulness. If we all did it then no more stigmas of using that time for more important things than our phones.

Sam: Do you have your own personal healing routine?

Fenton: Well when you have a one year old and another baby on the way routine is not set in stone but I always have the same constant intention which is to find balance and be creative. The one thing I will do everyday is to focus on or recite the Reiki Principles. (You can find these on The Gates Insta and on the website.)

I use lots of things, rolling through Tai Chi, Yoga and Mediation but right now just holding the intentions for my day and managing 10 minutes of meditation feels good to me. Really the best thing I have done is to learn how to listen to what my true self really has to say.

And most importantly its my walks, going for walks in nature. If I don’t have my walk then I really notice and there is no amount of mediation can fix it.

Sam: What was your first move into healing?

Fenton: Mums best friend was a healer, so I saw her a few times a year. I think I really started to see the benefits of it when I used healing to help give up alcohol for the first time. Realising how much I had neglected my inner child and my true passions.

I had been to AA and it didn’t seem for me, Intuitively with some alternative guidance I felt I could take myself through it effectively, Of course all peoples journeys out of alcoholism are different.

I read all the books you can read. The real thing that worked was I just started to feel my way through the process rather than being told where I should be or what I should be doing.

Everyone has the journey ahead of them if they want to take it. I would suggest as soon as you find something that works for you. Do that! Then you can just start to expand from there.

Sam: What was your first Reiki experience like?

Fenton: Was when I was doing my Reiki training. I remember struggling to believe in the process. It was only during a guided meditation did all of that apprehension drop away. I then had a few visions and some great affirmations came to me. That was it.

Oh and also I do remember thinking that Reiki was going to be this quick fix method. Thankfully it wasn’t! It made me delve much further into myself and the process.

Sam: What do you hope for your patients?

Fenton: I want them to embrace their highest selves and really no less will do. Isn’t that grandiose? He laughs. I don’t need them reach enlightenment but just so they feel the path they are on is the right path for them. The most important thing for me to try and teach my patients is to strengthen their bond to their intuition.

Sam: Whats the balance in your sessions of hand on energy work VS regular talking and figuring out problems?

Fenton: I will do whatever is needed in that moment. Some people need space and some people even need a hug! So it’s a balance between being invested in everyone but I cannot give my whole self over as there will be nothing left to work with. Touch is important, offering a hand even.

Sam: What have you found Reiki is most useful for?

Fenton: Personally It’s been my journey through addiction. Another big one for me was public speaking. I absolutely hated it. Using the techniques I have learnt I can honestly say it’s now my favourite thing to do.

For a lot of people they arrive with physical pain. It’s been interesting to see the shift that people are becoming more open minded that the body is more than the physical. Some patients have come to me with a certain pain and realising after a few sessions how connected that pain is with an experience they have had or an emotion they are feeling.

Back, shoulder and neck problems are huge. That area holds every experience we have ever had! So I work a lot with those areas for people.

Sam: What’s your personal relationship with Reiki as a modality?

Fenton: I don’t always think about Reiki as Reiki if that makes sense. I think about it as a very ancient method of healing, picked up by a Japanese guy who then called it Reiki. I’m very glad that he did but I would happily dispense with then name!

Fenton teaches Reiki at his retreat in Spain, you can go spend time in beautiful grounds and learn everything about using Reiki to heal yourself and others.

Sam: What’s your teaching style?

Fenton: Learn to unlearn! I like to teach Reiki and then want everyone to find their own path with it, establish Reiki as a practice that is developed by you, for you. I’m not one for Dogma or rules you must follow, you of course are taught how to do it but I never want to limit that.

Something else I learnt was equally Reiki isn’t for everyone. Some people are naturally in balance and do not need extra energy manipulation. Some like a lot more logical so I try and have information available to teach those kinds of folks also.

Fenton and I are chatting over Skype and he is told dinner is ready, I quickly get my last question in.

Sam: What do you believe in?

That’s the last question! He laughs. Well I think God resides in us all and if we embrace our higher self there is a good chance we will be able to enjoy and live life as Gods. I believe if we can be present, truthful and passionate in our daily lives then each of us will feel truly grateful for our existence.

Speaking with Fenton was an absolute pleasure, so many Reiki Masters can be purist in their approach and Fenton to me seemed so open and flexible to helping people in whatever way works best in the moment.
