They dragged themselves from the battlefield, still clad in the armor forged to protect them, both bruised, scarred and bleeding from too many wars.
Standing beneath a great oak, leaning their tired bodies against it’s sturdy trunk, they looked around at the glen that lay in front of them. Soft green grass swayed in a warm breeze. Dragonflies danced above a smooth pond, the moon reflecting off the water. A lush forest bordering all they could see.
Together they moved toward the pond, eager to submerse themselves in its cooling comfort. When they reached the water’s edge, he helped loosen the first piece of her armor as she did his. When their armor lay piled on the ground, they removed their helmets.
As their eyes met, she could see his colors glowing orange and yellow and red, flecked with streaks of gold. He could see hers, as well, a rainbow of colors outlined in glistening silver.
She took his hand, leading him into the water with her. The calm surrounded them, the movement of their bodies making ripples in the glassy stillness.
He pulled her close, chest to chest, hands clasped together, their gaze penetrating through each other. All of their pain, all of their truths exposed.
These two souls had been created from the same flame. Fused together, then torn apart to fight alone, now reunited in this beautiful place. Enveloped by the scent of ancient moss and fresh honeysuckle, surrounded by mighty oaks and towering pines. No words need spoken, every though expressed and understood through the eyes.
As they kissed each other’s scars, they seemed to fade away. The two lingered here for some time, carefully ridding their bodies of damage battle had left behind.
Finally, they lay bare in the dew soaked grass, free from the armor, staring up at that brilliant moon, restful in the knowledge that the sun would soon rise….relieved and grateful the war was over.
