When the bad thing happens
You have three choices:
One.
You can fill the new hole in you with water
With spite
With blame
And revenge –
But water doesn’t stay long
It seeps in all around
And your days will suddenly be filled with running to the river
You’ll think it’s living
But really you’re just making mud.
Two.
You can fill the hole with dirt
With men at the bar
With flimsy eye contact
And empty conversation –
But soon you’ll have just filled one hole
with another
And all of a sudden there will be ditches all around you
You’ll think it’s living
But really you’re just making a moat.
And three.
The hardest one.
Is to sit your ass down in that hole.
Fill it only with what’s left of you.
It will be cold in that dirt
It will be lonely
And it will sure as hell be slow –
But don’t you know what happens when something sits in the ground long enough?
It
Grows
Roots.
