If you notice the smell of your septic tank inside your house, it’s a clear warning that something isn’t functioning as it should. This odor often comes from sewer gases that are leaking into your home instead of being vented outdoors. The most common reasons include a dry or cracked P-trap, a damaged vent pipe, or a septic tank that’s overdue for pumping. In some cases, the wax ring under the toilet may be leaking gases as well.
To solve the issue, start by running water in rarely used drains to refill their traps. Check your vent pipes on the roof for blockages caused by leaves, bird nests, or debris. If the smell continues, contact a septic professional — they can inspect your system, pump the tank, and make sure all seals and vents are properly working. Regular inspections and maintenance can prevent septic odors from returning.
