Nothing, contrary to New Age mentality, is wrong with judging. The problem is pre-judging. Lady Justice does plenty of judging. She doesn’t, however, prejudge. Notice the sword of “prajna” in her right hand. We here at elephant try and do our share of “cutting through” that “Spiritual Materialism” stuff. Still, we get happy-yappy hippie-dippy love [...]

Well, hello there! It’s a been awhile, I know. Truthfully, I haven’t felt like writing…and so I haven’t. It’s rare for me to do something that I don’t want to do. I can’t decide if that’s a good thing or just proof of arrested development. A bit of both, maybe? But I’ve been feeling guilty: [...]

World AIDS Day falls on Dec. 1. And there ain’t too much Poetic about AIDS or HIV. Or is there? You could say it’s a day to reflect on both the value and fragility of human life. Since 1981, more than 25 million people have died due to the ravages of AIDS across our wild [...]

It’s 1989. The video camera – an old 8 mm – sweeps into a room, the focus, soft at first, comes clear and true on an impossibly dimpled face. A round, brown-eyed, dark haired two year old sits contentedly enveloped in a world of her own making. “Horses!”, she says popping out of her isolated [...]

It takes 100,000 gallons of gasoline to produce and ship a Prius to the United States (and even more to get it to Boulder, which is a well known vegan and green lifestyle hot spot). Buying a used Hummer would be better for the environment than buying a new Prius.

I was completely intrigued by Ashtanga at first sight, starting with its brutal schedule, its lack of poetry (no “feel the earth’s energy flow through you” ever heard in a class) and mythological superstition, as in: no new poses to be taught on Tuesdays because it is ruled by Mars which is the God of [...]

I was looking at the article about home births on Elephant Journal the other day and it reminded me of one of my favorite films, Stan Brakhage’s Window Water Baby Moving.

Buddhism and Homosexuality. One of the great things about Buddhism is, as the Dalai Lama says, that if it’s ever out of date it’ll just…change. You hear that often, from more “organized” religions? Well, sometimes. Why is Buddhism so happy to change its ways, if its teachings prove incorrect? Well, as the Dalai Lama says [...]
