When I should be zeroing in on my left knee in the mirror, I’m instead dealing with target fixation—yearning for the teacher to open a door and release into the room a rush of cool air from the lobby or the courtyard. (Oh yes, folks, my Bikram studio looks out onto a lush courtyard, one with bunnies and quail. When we do sasanagasana we push ourselves to impress the real rabbits peering through the windows. Your jealousy is warranted.)812 views

If I had just listened to the wise words of Peter Brady, I would have avoided such disasters as bangs, the job from hell, stir-up pants, the other job from hell, the master cleanse and roller blading.850 views

I find inspiration in my Zen Peacemakers training and also from yoga activist Michael Franti, who visited Occupy Wall Street this week. When I encountered Franti through his documentary I Know I'm Not Alone and his appearance at the Wanderlust Festival in VT, I sensed that he was a fellow peacemaker. Below, I quote the words of ZP founder Zen Master Bernie Glassman, from the peacemaker manual Bearing Witness, co-written by Zen Master Eve Marko and also words from the video (also below) of Franti's Wall Street visit.1,924 views

In meditation, in particular, the idea that we could learn to control our mind--our mind which we have been letting run wild, most of us, for as long as we've been alive--the idea that we could achieve this without real discipline and dedication is just...foolish.491 views

Living off-the-grid means living without public utilities like electricity. People who live off-the grid may not depend on municipal water, sewage, or natural gas. It also can mean you're self-sufficient in various ways. There are many third-world citizens who have lived off-the grid for generations. Some people choose this alternative lifestyle to save money. It's also a way to lower your environmental footprint. Michael "Mycol" Stevens lives off-the-grid just north of Gainesville, Florida. I met Mycol at a Fall planting workshop called "Fall Harvest Fest" hosted by our local green store, Indigo. He gave a talk about his experiences with self sustenance, organic living and his alternative lifestyle in general. He invited me to his place after the talk.7,664 views

It’s a chilly, grey October afternoon and I am drinking Riesling on the roof of The Gansevoort Hotel in downtown Manhattan. The wind off the Hudson River raises tiny goosebumps on my bare legs. I should be freezing my ass off in this ridiculous, miniscule, filmy dress I’m wearing but I don’t feel a thing. Just pure exhilaration. I clink plastic wineglasses with friends Megan Marie and Jen Weaver, who are sitting across our corner, rooftop table. Robert Sturman is drinking a beer. We are regrouping from a morning of shooting photos that aren’t quite working.816 views

Like many guys, I'm basically an action figure. So it is a revelation for me to realize that the practice of non-harming covers much more than actions. In fact, it goes even deeper than words or thoughts.602 views

There are dreams and there are nightmares. There will always be more improved versions of your current dream, but truly the ultimate freedom is waking up from the dream altogether. “The Truth about who we really are, beyond all appearances, is knowledge worth seeking.” Dzogchen Ponlop Rinpoche. In my most serene yoga-teacher voice, as if I am suggesting that Nancy Grace lie down for savasana, I say, “Ma'am, you don’t need to babysit me. I will move my bag.” And I do. But Nancy Grace, as you may know, is not the kind of lady to lie down in savasana, corpse pose, the equivalent of rolling over to play dead. No, ma’am, not she.464 views

As a reader of elephant journal, it is likely you have purchased Horizon Organic Milk, or Silk soy milk recently. Who knew they were owned by the same company, White Wave, who is now owned by Dean Foods? I sure didn’t.Even though food companies like Dean Foods are acquiring companies demonstrating Right-Livelihood, like White Wave, it is still disturbing that the industry is moving closer and closer to being monopolized. The loss of integrity in the organic food industry, along with Monsanto's rising is a eminent crisis that will affect our generation very soon.643 views

Think about it. If you ask your mother or father, “Can you guide me into the gateway of my heart?” What do you expect them to say? “No, I don’t live in my own heart. How can I guide you?” Well, I think it’s asking a lot from most parents to admit their inadequacies. Because parents need to act as though they have their shit together for their children. Especially when they don't.514 views

In case you haven’t heard, Occupy Wall Street is the spark that has ignited a revolution that is spreading like wildfire around the globe. The fuel is the people that are showing up in over 113 US cities, and 28 international ones, as of this writing. Lawyers, business people, former home owners, students and activists are gathering in cities around the world to stand up to the powers that be, and send a message that enough is enough.1,188 views
