Feeling Sleepy After Breakfast? 3 Likely Causes

When the alarm clock wakes you up in the morning, the last thing on your mind is that you might start feeling sleepy only a few hours after getting out of the bed. But unfortunately, this can happen to anyone yet it is not always easy to explain what triggers early and mid-morning drowsiness. If you have been facing this challenge, you might want to ponder on the following 3 key issues – and that’s in addition to visiting your doctor for further advice.

(1) Is Your Food Too Sugary?

Is your breakfast meal too sugary? Well, while a sudden rise in blood sugar levels can potentially cause an energy spike, the results are usually short-lived. Eventually, this leads to a “crash” which is characterized by a sudden drop in blood sugar levels and, therefore, loss of energy.

In that regard, your best bet is to avoid or reduce your intake of sugary items. Try to replace those instead with more veggies and fruits.

PS: Feeling sleepy after breakfast? A sugary dessert taken the previous night might also be the culprit.

(2) You Are Eating A Bit Too Much

It might sound insensitive for anyone to tell their friend that they are eating a bit more than they need. But the problem here is that it takes quite some time for your brain to alert your stomach that you are actually getting full.

And for that reason, it is possible to overfeed even when you don’t intend to do so. So, you might want to start watching not just what you eat, but how much of it you eat.

Don’t starve yourself, though. The best approach is to breakdown your meals into at least 5 meal sessions per day. That way, you can eat smaller but healthier portions rather 3 or 2 extremely large servings.

(3) You Are A Vegetarian

Even though the vegetarian diet is very healthy and recommended by diet experts across from across the world, it has its downsides as well. One of these downsides is the fact that it tends to deprive you of Vitamin B12.

Vitamin B12 is only found in animal sourced protein. And unfortunately, there is no plant in the world that produces it. Yet another thing worth keeping in mind is that this vitamin is an essential part of your Central Nervous System (CNS) functions.

Therefore, low quantities of it in the body can lead to depression, pallor, anxiety, and even fatigue. For that reason, if you’ve been feeling abnormally tired at the early hours of the day and you’re a vegetarian, it might be a good idea to have a doctor examine you for this.

This is important keeping in mind the fact that past studies have confirmed that 60% of vegetarians face a vitamin B12 deficiency.

Final Thoughts

There are many possible reasons why you might feel sleepy even at the time of the day that you should be most active in. Fortunately, in most cases, there is no cause for alarm. You may need to make a few lifestyle changes, get enough rest, watch your diet and most importantly surround yourself with positive people.
Above all, be sure to seek medical advice from a qualified and licensed practitioner in your area. This can help determine if your fatigue is easily manageable at home or one necessitating medical intervention.
