What You Need to Know About Mental Health.

In 2018, the topic of mental health was on every discussion board as one of the most talked about topics of the year. This wasn’t because we didn’t understand the importance of taking care of our mental selves but because we didn’t understand the full meaning of it. We also didn’t fully realize how many people struggled with issues relating to our mental health. More than 1 in 4 adults have a diagnosed form of mental illness–whether that is depression, anxiety, or something else. Because it is such a prevalent issue in society, it is important to understand every angle of it. Here’s exactly what you need to know about mental health and mental illness.

1. Mental Illness is Real

The very first thing that you need to understand about mental illnesses is that they are real. Often, it’s a hormone imbalance that causes the problem. You can’t simply tell someone who suffers from depression that they need to smile more and they’ll be happier. It’s not that simple. Those who suffer from depression and/or suicidal thoughts should seek medical help. They are going through a real disorder that can’t be fixed by smiling more or by thinking happier thoughts. Often, those types of comments will simply make the matter worse since they will feel let down when it isn’t working for them. It’s not a weakness or a flaw that you have. It’s just as real and tangible as cancer or disease. That means that you shouldn’t feel ashamed that you’re struggling with regulating stress, emotions, or thoughts. If you or a loved one suffers from a mental illness, recognize that it is real and it is someone that you should seek help with.

2. Each Case is Different

Every case of mental illness is unique to the individual. There isn’t one prescribed medication or practice that will cure all people. Just like you’re unique, so is your mind. Since mental illnesses attack the mind, they are just as unique as you are. Some people find that exercise helps them to cope with their mental state. They enroll for programs that Le-Vel Thrive that give them 24-hr fitness support which gives the person a physical outlet for their emotions. Others, however, find that exercise makes their mood swings and anxiety worse and they need something more soothing to help. Each person responds to therapy differently and you should never try to force someone into a position that might not help them. If the individual says that a certain type of therapy isn’t working for them, be understanding and know that their case is much different from your own. They will respond differently.

3. It’s Not What You See in the Movies

Lastly, mental illnesses are not what you see in the movies. People do not develop superpowers from their illnesses and the illness shouldn’t be glorified. Mental illnesses can disrupt daily life and cause people to retreat into their shells. Personality disorders can be serious (as shown in movies) but are more often benign and simply make life difficult or interesting depending on the person’s individual case. Just because you’ve seen a movie that details the life of a person who’s afflicted with a mental disorder doesn’t mean that you should try to understand someone who actually experiences it. Remember, again, that mental health is a real issue that should be treated with understanding and respect. Never make someone feel silly or disingenuous for expressing their struggles with a mental illness.

Conclusion

Mental illness is someone that millions of people struggle with every day. Whether or not you struggle with a form of mental illness, you should do your best to be understanding and considerate to all others. You often don’t know what someone else is going through. So, even on your worst days, be kind to the strangers around you. Treat people with respect and love and open the gateway to make it acceptable to talk about mental health.
