Peter Pan Syndrome (a poem)

Sit and watch the sky slowly fade

Darkness taking over day

You wish upon a bright shooting star

Hoping that you are not far gone

You wonder if you will ever grow old

This thought takes you to a land so bold

A land beyond the moon and stars

A land where you stay true to you

A land called Neverland

How beautiful it is

Where every dream is surreal

“You can fly!” They say

The children who never grew up

They live here in happiness

You want to live with them

But what about your life back home

You begin to wonder if you truly fit in there

Maybe you belong right here

In a world of no tomorrow

A world of never ending days

A smile grows on your face

You run through the bright green fields

Feeling so delicate

So childlike

You forget sadness exists

As the crisp air takes you in its arms

Like the grasp of a warm hug

That’s when you remember

This is all but a dream

You hear the faint ringing of bells in the distance

Signaling you to awake

You are forced into flight

Neverland becomes a twinkle from a far

Your eyes opening to the darkness

But the smile still planted across your cheeks

The invisible grasp slowly let’s you down

In this world full of sad

This world that forever ages

Is a touch brighter

Because in your heart

Neverland lives on

And you are free
