Kolkata has been named right – The city of Joy. Yes, it is true!
With people from every caste, religion, colour and creed, the place also spurges on its street food. Sick of the mundane days I revolted to stay back in bed and decided to excavate some of Kolkata’s street food.
It turned my yummy idea into a sumptuous day!
After an immense struggle with Delhi, Amritsar, Mumbai, Ahmedabad, Kolkata has been entitled as the best street food destination (as per the “Taste of Travel” survey) with a staggering array of food items.
Being a food blogger and traveller I always had a knack for trying foods from around the world. Though “around the world” was not possible at the moment, “around Kolkata” was my aim.
Kolkata is well aware of the fact that the world’s greatest geniuses are vegetarians but meat is what all Kolkataians eat!
Excited?
Join me on my journey to the expedition to Kolkata street food.
Momos
When in doubt let momos be your scout!
Although a Tibetan delicacy, no Kolkataians can ever say no to momos. Found in different varieties a momos are my go-to evening bite.
To all the momo lovers out there – dive into its varieties Steamed Momo, Fried Momo, Pan-Fried Momo, Cheese Momo, Chocolate Momo, Tandoori Momo…
Okay!
There are more but I am drooling already, and again!
Momos being one of my favourites, I started my voyage with a mouth-full. The ‘chaatni’ for momo sauce (as others call it) the spicy tickle helped me kick start my day and also my stomach.
Leaving behind the fancy yet yummy momos I decided to stick to the basic steamed momo sold at the exit gate of Rabindra Sadan Metro in a small unnamed establishment.
Fuchka
There was still time left for me to get to a “lunch den” I decided to kill a tat-bit of my hunger with the famous Kolkata fuchka. Breaking the mundane taste I decided to try the chocolate fuchka by What the Fuchka. The unique and sweet kick worked as a palate cleanser after the sumptuous momo.
Fuchka stands amongst the list of the 10 must-have foods while travelling to India, however, the variant sold in Kolkata has a flavour different from all, with the right amount of spiciness and tanginess makes a taste to die for.
Roll
There was much of a buzz about the 18-inch roll by Bawarchi and hence I headed over to give it a try. With loaded “masalas”, veggies, omelette, chicken and paneer the roll was quite heavy for a “little soul” like me to gorge it completely.
Though I took way too much time, somehow I managed to complete it.
Being filled till the throat I decided to rest for a bit and search for something interesting to gorge on next.
Tandoori Tea
The sun was about to set and being a Bong my throat was craving for the evening chai. I have heard a lot about the Tandoori tea and hence decided to try it and hence headed over to the triangular park to visit Desi Thela.
Being a fan of tandoor and smoky flavours the tea was an oasis for my “Tea Thirsty” throat.
Biriyani
Being a shopaholic as well I decided to head over to the shopping hub of Kolkata – New Market, Esplanade. After picking up some essentials and some fashion I decided to drop by some Biryani hub and have my dinner. Being a little restricted on my pocket and hygiene conscious I headed to the famous Dada Boudi Biryani.
Rosogolla
Too tired I decided to end my journey on a sweet note. On my way back home I picked up some Rosogolla from Balaram Mullick & Radharaman Mullick near my house. Being near to my house I am highly accustomed to the taste and hence it is my go-to dessert.
My food expedition ended on a sweet note. The day will always be memorable and I am looking forward to more explorations like this. Kolkata being my hometown and my favourite street food centre, has never failed to surprise me with remarkable and unforgettable tastes that I am sure will crave for the very next morning.
