We are all facing an unprecedented time of crisis. It is, in the circumstances like this, that leaders are expected to show up and support their teams. Here are some ways you can be a mindful leader through the pandemic and in future times of crisis.
Connect With People
Intentionally fostering human connection has become more important than ever before. Millions of us are working from home, devoid of the human contact that used to pervade our lives. If we don’t reach out to connect with others, we risk feeling isolated, lonely, and disconnected.
As a leader, you must take time every single day to connect with your team. Host group chats, as well as one-on-one check-ins whenever possible. During these one-on-one talks, be empathetic. Ask how each individual is doing mentally and emotionally. You can also ask if there is anything additional you can be doing to support them through this time. Recognize that your people may need a little more from you right now.
Also, remember that your team members are likely suffering from a lack of belonging. Try to create new ways for everyone to connect all together. For example, you can schedule a group Zoom meeting at least once per week. You can also have an ongoing group chat via Skype. Be creative and try to get everyone involved.
Encourage Your Team to Destress
It is also essential that you encourage your team to take time to release stress through this time. Working at home can lead to burnout just as working in an office can. Plus, we are all dealing with a constant bombardment of negative news. We need to be mindful of our emotions and help our team members to manage theirs as well.
Talk to your team about scheduling time in their days to decompress. Breathing exercises and meditation are great options for this. If you’re comfortable, you could even lead a guided meditation with your team using a video chat. If that’s not your thing, you can also send videos or guides to help them get started on their own.
How you choose to show up as a leader during this time of crisis might make all the difference for the future of your team and company. Take care of yourself, connect with people, and encourage your team to take care of themselves and each other. In the end, you’ll be glad that you did.
