”
I tried to survive and failed to do so. Forgive me.
To my friends
The experience was harsh and I was too weak to withstand it.
To the World
You were extremely Harsh, but I Forgive.
Sarah Hegazy
”
(Translated from her Arabic handwriting)
These were the last words of Sarah Hegazy, who as 30-year-old social justice activist took her own life in Canada.
She was an Egyptian LGBTQ Activist who was released from the harsh experience of prison in Egypt due to committing the crime of “Promoting Homosexuality”. She was arrested after raising the Rainbow flag in a music concert in October 2017.
After her release in 2018, she took refuge in Canada, where she sank in depression which was apparent in her Twitter feed “The sky is more beautiful from the earth, I want the sky, not the earth”
There are still harsh echos in the aftermath of her decent to the sky. As we are still fighting among each other in the Arabic virtual world and recreating the hell she took refuge from.
Although her last parting words, which was written amidst her emotional inner and outer chaos, are filled with such grace for us,
And Forgave what is unforgivable.
Sarah died because of our sins, and sent us the precious gift of forgiveness, for us who still do not know what are we doing.
