When I recall my experience France has very big variety of Buddhist traditions and also is open mind so there’s no such things as sectarianism in France. In my early age I educated myself with Buddha teachings. I start to meditate in the Japanese zen traditions very strict, then I move to thai and found my way in Tibetan buddhism. I took refuge in the kagyu then nigmapas and guelugpa learn from all of them. Today I read an article on tricycle on Tibetan Buddhism saying that fear base, personally never feard doing my home decision, I have study sutra and tantras, we learn that basically our belief system is the key. Took me long time to found Garchen Rinpoche and all different traditions that I have tested because for me I came from base of witchcraft I test use try see if that make sense for me. Now after move from Karma Kagyu due to the karmapa war, I discovered Drikung kagyu, with Dorzin Dundrup Rinpoche and Garchen Rinpoche, took refuge vows three time because from Hinduism in past I learn bakti and from sikh I learn guru devotion. No Rinpoche will tell you jump of roof .
To be honest with you Garchen Rinpoche saved my life, because when I met him I was in pieces due to some very bad events in my life, sadly bad events never really stop that short promotional samsaric happiness suffering is always near, doesn’t mean we need to be fearful when we recognise that true happiness is lasting samsara as more grip. I studied Zen, Shingon, theravada and more but so far was always same Buddha and story of people who followed his teaching them create a tradition. In our time we must find the traditions that suit the most for us then the teacher that explains the best for us, then we need found the practice that work the best for us what is link to our teacher. All of this take years took me years to found Garchen Rinpoche took time to follow his advice, we in time we want enlightenment in 5 min because we need to enjoy samsaric pleasure but the truth is the Buddha himself took all his life to find it.
