Homosexuality isn’t karma

I was scrolling through my instagram stories when I saw somebody asking something to a Buddhist page that made me sad in such a strong way that took me out of my usual attitude as an occultist, that is used to be quiet and simply don’t share my knowledge.

An anonymous person presented as a homosexual asked if it was from his karma to have this sexual orientation. The answer was obviously respectful, as we expect from this great tradition, but it was generic, so I felt this urge to clarify the question.

No, homosexuality isn’t karma. In fact, what makes it hard to be homosexual is our society’s intolerance to what is seen as “normal”, mostly taken from religion that, in general, condemn what they don’t see as the “standard”.

For instance, during centuries, in ancient Rome, the standard was to be bisexual and that was the orientation expected from people in that society, probably reserving a different treatment for those that weren’t included in the norm, such as heterosexuals, as “mistaken” or “wrong” (we can’t forget sexual orientation isn’t something learned, but rather natural and is born differently in each one of us).

Karma is, in fact, to be born in a society as ours, that is always aching and looking for reasons to exclude and to make others “look” inferior or broken somehow: as you can see, each one of us is making this karma right now by choosing to bring pain or freedom for those that are beside us.
