Smooth seas do not make skillful sailors

The quote “smooth seas do not make skillful sailors” which is an old African proverb is a quote that has been long ago utilized and said in different ways as well as in diverse parts of the world. This quote serves as a great motivation for every single individual who wants to chase his dreams , handle his hardships or survive the current situation. It is an intense consolation for each desperate soul that keeps wrestling against life’s tremendous amount of pain , melancholy and cowardice. It is a reflection of the reality that most of us want to wholly -or at least partially- escape , for we all long to the final end yet we do not want to get through the process .For this reason , I believe that the quote between hands is trying to educate us as human beings about the importance of comprehending the workings of the universe besides to perceiving the world with its mechanisms in a reasonable , deep and meaningful manner. Therefore , I personally conceive that sentient creatures are nothing more than an accumulation of survival trials , lost experiences and above all challenging conditions.

When we were kids , we have always admired older people .We were fascinated by their strength and power as well as all the advantages that they do possess. We have always believed that mature adults can handle whatever life throws at them . We assumed that they were able to say NO to destiny when they are in disagreement with the continuous daily life unpleasing events. As the little rebellious children, we have always thought that grown up people have the utmost potential of leading their lives
the way they want. With a great sorrow , and years later , we came to realise that the universe was way much more complex and obnoxious. Eventually,we lost our interest in the deliruim we have built when we got acquainted with the first failure , the first betrayal , and the first disappoinment.Based on this , and with the flow of the years , we started turning into what we hated ‘ adults’.However , reaching that stage has also granted us the chance to be introduced to another new concept. Therein , we have
been fortunate enough to contruct abstract ideas that could shut down our inner noises. These ideas functioned as firefighters whom doused our doubts and complaints when we most needed it. The main ideas were : there is no escape from destiny , there is a limited human choice, life is and will always be a continuous struggle.

Reading the quote several times made me feel the emphasis on the difficulty of surviving, this latter that has long been addressed by ample philosphers and thinkers. One of the books that i could link to the content of this quote is ‘ the stranger by Albert Camus’ where the main character faces sorrow , loss and obstacles , it shows that the universe is all againt the human being and all it does is hindering his journey. The book depicts the sad real world and how people themselves contribute to complicating the everyday simple processes through the shallow traditions and beliefs based on no
benefits or logical reasoning but instead only biases and personal preferences or even well-spread old myths. As the book constantly declares the hard part of each person’s life experience which alligns with the quote’s first part . The book also contradicts the second part. For the book introduces the sadness and absurdism of life as a fact that human creatures can not and will never be able to act upon. The author of the book presents the universe as a powerful dominant entity while the individual is a powerless weak entity that surrenders and succumbs to the reign of the world without being able to alter nor choose. However , the given quote  is more optimistic and motivational as it noties people with the fact that every hard work  will definitely sooner or later pay off.

Characters from movies or series sometimes are the best example of life stories and struggles.Out of many cinema products that I have watched , I find ‘Anne with E series’ the best example of a young girl who left no hair unturned in order to improve and lead a different life despite all the financial struggles and emotional traumas. Anne was a rebellious strong girl from her very infancy .She has grown up in an orphanage after being abandoned by her real parents. During her residency in the orphanage , Anne was exposed to ample mean and filthy acts by her fellow orphans. Not only this , but she has been treated awfully by the orphanage workers. Nevertheless, when Anne has been adopted by two old siblings , she embarks on building her own personality that has been supressed for years. Anne grows to be an independent strong lady who got admitted to one of the most prestigeous universities in London. Meanwhile, she managed to defend children’s rights in creativity as well as women’s rights to work in a remote small village that holds traditions as sacred verses from a holy book. If that proves anything , it is that the hard times Anne experienced only made of her a real female warrior and leader. Or in other words , the turbulent sea made her a skillful sailor.

Regardless of the inevitable misfortune and afflictions , humans are capable of turning it into a strength at some point of their lives. For what is a man ? if he is not the product of his past solved mysteries , well passed sufferings and deep learned lessons. A human being can not evolve nor improve without having to go through what aches his body and debilitates his soul. Nevertheless, when a man gets out of a storm he never gets out of it the same way he entered it !
