No matter where they work, educators will encounter students from diverse backgrounds and cultural experiences. While some areas may have more diversity than others, even just differences in socioeconomic status can lead to drastic differences in a student’s experiences outside of the classroom. Historically, culturally diverse students such as English language learners and students of color have underperformed compared to their peers. Utilizing a culturally responsive curriculum can help close those learning gaps and equip all students to thrive educationally.
Essentially, schools can implement a culturally responsive curriculum by encouraging teachers to learn about students’ backgrounds, incorporate culturally relevant materials into lesson plans, and work with students’ strengths.
Strengthens Students’ Identities
When students experience elements of their culture and traditions in the classroom, it helps strengthen their personal and cultural identities while connecting with the lessons. Representation is a powerful tool that builds confidence and a sense of belonging.
Focuses on Students’ Assets, Not Deficits
Rather than focusing on how a student doesn’t measure up, such as reading delays in an English language learner, a culturally responsive teacher focuses on the advantages a student has. Bilingual students may sometimes struggle with English literacy but be above grade level in literacy skills in another language. Recognizing that underperforming in one area is not a full measure of students’ skills helps educators encourage students in their strengths while empowering them to overcome their weaknesses.
Increases Student Success
Many studies have been conducted on culturally responsive curriculum that support the success of this method. When students’ cultural backgrounds are considered, their needs are better understood and consequently more effectively met, leading to higher academic achievement.
Teaches Cultural Competence
In addition to benefits for culturally diverse students, using this kind of curriculum also benefits educators and the whole classroom, increasing cultural competence and awareness. These are valuable skills that help build a more welcoming and inclusive community.
Culturally responsive teaching offers numerous benefits to students, only a few of which we covered here. All students deserve to be celebrated and supported in the classroom, and implementing this curriculum empowers educators to do just that.
