Poetry exists on a realm that is neither practical nor logical. It is emotive, subjective and sensitive to factors that may be unseen in the world. Writing has many purposes, but if inspiration and emotional therapy rank anywhere in its uses, poetry would be one of the main forms of writing that enables this. I don’t share all of my poems because they are mainly for myself to process certain things: confusions about the power structures in the world, conflicts in relationships, and the very enigma of life. Leonard Cohen said that poetry was the “ash” of Life when it was burning well. It seems wholly unnecessary and yet it is evidence of unseen things that still matter: the thoughts and feelings we have but can’t quite explain in prose.
