“I’m gonna keep on singing till my soul catches up with my song.” ~ Brandon Lake, “Hard Fought Hallelujah”
Some days it’s “why bother,” and other days it’s “never give up.”
If you are paying attention, everything feels overwhelming and upside down right now. From the evening news to our social media accounts, we are bombarded with end-of-the-world doom and gloom.
But on any given day you can also look around and find joy and beauty and hope.
Of course we need to stay informed and do our part to stand up to the injustices around us.
We all need to be warriors in this fight between good and evil.
We can’t all be sign-carrying foot soldiers though. Some of us are more like armchair revolutionaries.
When you aren’t able to take to the streets of downtown USA to show your displeasure with the current state of affairs, what are other opportunities for acts of rebellion?
>> Stop shopping at businesses that participate in practices that are harmful to Mother Earth and all her inhabitants.
>> Give your support and money (when you can) to leaders and groups and organizations that uphold the sanctity of all sentient beings.
>> Educate yourself so that in conversations with others that have opposing opinions you are able to stand your ground and speak with confidence and conviction.
>> Be a safe place for anyone who needs protection, an ally, or a defender.
But what about the “why bother” days? We are all going to have them. What should we do on the days we just can’t muster the energy to care?
>> Go joy hunting! Walks in nature; listening to a baby laugh; letting a puppy lick your face—things that make you smile for no other reason than that they exist.
>> Find the helpers! Read stories or watch documentaries on people that have made a difference. You might find inspiration for actions you can take when your energy returns.
>> Spend time with the people you love. Family dinners; movie nights; weekend road trips—making memories that can carry you through whatever might come.
>> Take time for yourself. Breath; watch the sunrise; walk along the beach; eat ice cream; listen to Coltrane while you watch the sunset.
>> Remember that no matter what, it is all worth it. This life we are given is short but breathtaking. It is awe inspiring on good days and heart wrenchingly beautiful even in the challenging times.
So I guess my point is, whether you woke up this morning ready to join the fight or simply want to pull the covers back over your head, just remember to keep singing your song and feeding your soul. The world is going to keep turning no matter which you choose.
~
