The holiday season has passed, and I’m thankful for the time with family and the excitement of opening our beautiful gifts.
But now that the guests have left and the decorations are packed away, the house feels quiet—more open.
I notice it’s time to add something new.
Winter slows things down and puts me in a reflective mood. In that stillness, it can feel as if something is being placed directly in front of me, and the realization that life is moving faster than I expected. I don’t feel that same awareness in the summer, when everything is louder, brighter, and moving forward all at once.
But there is no time for me to dwell on things; it is time to move forward and navigate through this unwanted season.
The first thing I choose to pay attention to is my diet, especially after indulging in my favorite Italian food and desserts. And as I’m doing my best to get back to my regular, healthy routine, here comes January. It always seems to arrive before I’m ready, and always feels like I’m dealing with an unexpected guest.
I can’t make it leave, but I can find ways to stay grounded and motivated. The dark season always has a way to make everything feel heavier, and that feeling comes on slowly. If I’m not careful, I start to feel more sluggish each day. Small self-care projects remind me I can take control, which helps me feel more capable during this season.
When mornings get tougher, the darkness sticks around, and life seems to slow down, I choose to not let the season sap my motivation or pull me away from the routines that keep me focused. I’m grateful to live somewhere with unpredictable seasons. Some years are cold, and once we even had a white Christmas, which was rare and probably won’t happen again.
But when the weather is milder, I love to take my canoe out and paddle. It feels like summer in the middle of the dormant months. To stay fit, I also love yoga as it helps me through these colder months. It’s not about pushing myself, but about being present. Yoga gives me a calm space to reset and feel balanced, which is important for my peace of mind.
Besides eating better and staying active, I enjoy starting new projects, like updating my home or creating cozy spaces.
This time of year can feel like an opportunity to refresh our home and make it feel warmer. My husband and I are replacing our kitchen cabinets right now. I’ve long wanted a farmhouse color to make the space feel more welcoming. Creating cozy spaces helps me feel safe and comforted, making winter’s heaviness easier to bear.
We also have a reading room at home called the Zen Den. I recently added a comfy couch and two coffee tables to that quiet space. And not long ago, I spent an afternoon at the local bookstore picking out new books just for that room. Bringing new reading material into this relaxing spot has become a yearly tradition I look forward to.
Working on these projects gives me a sense of renewed energy after weeks of quiet reflection. Doing things like updating the kitchen or making the reading room cozier helps keep my days on track and makes the season feel like it’s moving forward. Some weeks I see real progress, while other weeks are just for measuring, planning, or waiting.
These projects and self-care rituals have beautifully shifted the mood of January, making everything feel more manageable, giving each day a sense of purpose, softening the quiet, and allowing the house to feel more loved and lived in, even before everything is finished.
For me, January is a time to stay focused, grounded, and organized. Taking on one small habit or project at a time makes life feel easier and brings comfort and intention. And I encourage you all to find your own ways to stay motivated during the winter.
This season will pass, but until then, moving through it with care is essential. Whatever project you choose, remember that small efforts can turn January from an unwelcome guest into a time for growth and renewal. Even the quietest months can help us stay centered and build strength for what’s ahead.
