9 Easy Ways to Improve Your Mental Wellbeing
In our busy world, it’s easy to let our mental health fall on the backburner. It can be a hassle to go to your doctor’s office or mental healthcare provider. It can also be overwhelming to deal with or feel more “real” if you address it. But luckily, taking care of your mental wellbeing isn’t as hard as it seems. We have 8 easy ways to help improve your mental health. Without further ado, here they are:
- Improve Your Diet
It’s been well documented that the way we eat affects our mental health. Eating healthy foods and drinking plenty of water has a huge, positive impact on our mental health. Opt for a healthier lifestyle rather than a fad diet. Diets are meant to be temporary, and can often be detrimental to your health if you stay on them too long. Healthy lifestyle changes to the way you eat are much different, in that it’s safe to continue indefinitely, and doesn’t have a concrete “end date”. Of course, talk to your doctor before you make any huge changes, just to make sure that you undergo a healthy change that is safe for you.
- Meditate Regularly
Meditation can help to clear your mind and organize your thoughts. Whether you choose to couple it with yoga as a sort of “physical meditation” or go with more simple meditations like breathing exercises, it can help you to feel more calm and relaxed.
- Take Supplements
There are quite a few supplements that can help with your mental health. Ashwagandha and Neuro Peak are two popular supplements, as well as lecithin, fish oil, and St. John’s wort. Be sure to check with your doctor to make sure that these supplements won’t interact with any medications you’re already taking.
- Sleep Well
Sleep has a big impact on your mental health. Getting enough sleep for your mind and body to repair itself can greatly improve your mental health. Ensuring that you get the proper 6 – 8 hours of sleep or more may take some time as you adjust to a new schedule, but it’s well worth the effort to plan it out.
- Enjoy Nature
There have been many studies that have come out saying that even just unplugging your earphones and listening to the sounds of nature every day can improve your mood and mental health, but nothing quite beats camping. Taking the time to enjoy nature, whether it be for an hour a day or a weekend away, can vastly boost your mental health and just leave you feeling at peace.
- Stress Relief Hobbies
Part of mental imbalances can be that you feel you have no outlet. Stress, anger, and sadness build up and you just don’t know what to do. That’s why finding a good hobby that allows you to relieve stress or build up eustress (the good, positive stress that is actually beneficial to you) is crucial to improving mental health.
Taking up writing, painting, sketching, sports, jogging, hiking, swimming, gardening, cooking, so on can give you a healthy outlet to let go of your stress.
- Change Your Circle
It’s easy to get stuck in a rut, especially when you feel you can’t make big changes. But something that affects us all that we might not even take into consideration is your circle of friends. If your friends tend to bring you down, try to knock you down when you try to pull yourself up, or encourage you to wallow in your sadness, it’s time to switch it up.
Distance yourself from negative influences, and seek out people who live the way you want to live. Look for people who are happy, pursuing their dreams, and just positive in general.
- Set Goals
Setting goals for yourself can help you build confidence and feel accomplished. Start out slowly, with goals that are easy to achieve (like doing daily chores), then transition to adding in bigger life changes that are important to you (such as pursuing medium goals), then building up to chasing your dreams.
- Keep it Clean
Keeping your home clean can have a surprising impact on your mental health. Not only is it less stressful to manage, it’s more visually pleasing. It can also help to keep your mind clear, sharp, and organized.
While it’s important to stay in touch with friends, family, and (of course!) your doctor if you’re suffering from mental health issues, you don’t have to just settle for a pill. Hopefully, these tips will help you as much as they’ve helped us. Find what works for you, give it time, and don’t be discouraged if one option doesn’t work for you. These work best together!
