What do you think of when you hear the terms “mindfulness” or “holistic?” Let’s take a look at what these terms mean, and then dive into the role that mindfulness can play in holistic health.
What is Mindfulness?
Mindfulness is the act of being aware or of being present. When you’re practicing mindfulness, you’re focusing on being aware of what’s going on around you or how you are feeling at the moment. You can also learn to be mindful of your emotions, preventing you from overreacting or feeling overwhelmed by them.
The opposite of mindfulness can look like being distracted or lost in thought. For example, when you’re not mindful about how you spend your time, you might lose a whole day scrolling through social media. Or, when you aren’t conscious of your mental health, you might take on too many tasks at work, leaving you feeling stressed and possibly leading to burnout syndrome.
What is Holistic Health?
The word “holistic” means whole. Holistic health refers to the health of the whole person. If you go to a holistic doctor, they will not treat just one aspect of your health but your overall well-being. Holistic healthcare professionals recognize all aspects of wellness are intertwined.
For example, stress is a psychological response that can cause physical symptoms, including insomnia, sickness, headaches, and weight gain. Imagine trying to address one of these symptoms without dealing with the root cause. You may see some positive results by treating a symptom, but those positive results would only be temporary. Holistic healthcare providers always aim to find the root of every problem and solve issues for the long term.
What Role Does Mindfulness Play in Holistic Health?
As you may have guessed, mindfulness is critical to optimal health. Mindfulness reduces stress and increases enjoyment in everyday activities. Mindfulness has physical benefits, such as improving sleep, reducing chronic pain, lowering blood pressure, healing gastrointestinal trouble, and can even be used to treat heart disease.
Mindfulness can also play a role in mental health and can be used as part of a treatment for depression, anxiety, OCD, and other ailments. When a person practices mindfulness as part of their daily routine, they are more likely to report being happy. They also become more accepting of themselves and others.
Mindfulness should be incorporated into everyone’s wellness routines to achieve optimal health and wellbeing. So, if you are aiming to live your best life, start by practicing mindfulness today!
