Obama commits to getting puppy from Shelter. Video with Stephanopoulos.

Buying a dog from a breeder is understandable. You (think you) know what you’re getting. Problem is: you’re creating supply when there’s already too much supply and not enough demand…meaning you could be saving a life, but instead are sacrificing one and creating another. Naughty, naughty.

With the economy in shambles, more dogs and cats are getting killed due to overflowing shelters, the continued tendency of rich ignorant folks to get dogs from breeders and puppy farms and pet stores, and the inability of poor folks to pay for pet food and care. So it’s good news that Obama, leading the way and setting an example, is gonna go the rescue-route. Turns out his daughters’ need for a hypoallergenic pooch complicates the search, but doesn’t make it impossible.

With thanks for the heads up to Ecorazzi. Excerpt:

…settled on either a labradoodle or a Portuguese water hound. “Now, we’ll go to a shelter and see when either one of those comes up,” he added.

The search for the White House dog has been complicated by 10-year-old Malia Obama’s allergies — which led many to believe that the family might go with a breeder. Thankfully, the President-elect appears to be well on his way to backing up earlier support for shelter and animal rescue programs. Truly, such action brings wonderful attention to the multitude of adoption and rescue initiatives across the country.

We look forward to receiving news of what lucky pup gets the nod!

About the image: Check out Muttslikeme.com, a website inspired by Obama’s recent comment about how his family’s new puppy would likely be “a mutt like me.” The image also will be distributed to 7,000 shelters across the country to promote the cause.
