Dogs = children?

Dr. Berns is just the first scientist to conduct such a study. The first. Imagine how far we can progress over the next years.

This is kind of a big deal for dog lovers and philosophers and vegans and…dogs.

If dogs are proven to be sentient on the level of a human child, should they cease to be legally treated as property?

That’s the fascinating question at the heart of this new NY Times article and scientific studies showing dogs’ brains to have MRI readings equivalent to humans in many ways:

…But many of the same things that activate the human caudate, which are associated with positive emotions, also activate the dog caudate. Neuroscientists call this a functional homology, and it may be an indication of canine emotions.

The ability to experience positive emotions, like love and attachment, would mean that dogs have a level of sentience comparable to that of a human child. And this ability suggests a rethinking of how we treat dogs.
