For as long as I can remember, I’ve heard that “girls are asking for it,” when they wear short skirts, Daisy Dukes, when their midriffs show, shirts reveal cleavage or for their having too much make-up on.
I also have heard, “She’s not pretty enough to be raped,” in passing a few times. Living in a fairly large city–San Diego—for 18 years exposed me to a bit of these crude, despicable comments surrounding rape.
Rape doesn’t play favorites.
Rape happens to children, to boys and girls, to women and men. We know this, but still among us are those with shallow viewpoints regarding it.
It’s slam poets like this that help to shine light on those dark places, exposing the horrors of rape for what it truly is. Victims of rape are not relegated to the “beautiful,” ones. Rape is a sick aspect of humanity in which everyone is a potential victim.
